Customer Reviews of Ice Cream
I Underestimated Them... After hearing the 'Ice Cream' song I wrote them off as one semi hit wonders and went on about my business. But after taking a full listen to their album, I see that these Johnson Sisters have great potential to do some things. They can actually sing (forget Ice Cream) as evidenced on songs like Love Angel, Slow Grind, Someone, and Stay. R. Kelly found something in these women and does a pretty good job of overlooking the cd production. The fast songs don't really suit them too well. In fact, as others have mentioned, they do have a lil 'Changing Faces' in em and that's always good. They thrived on ballads and midtempos and JS does the same. The best song is the beautiful 'Stay Right Here', it just has a classic sound to it and unlimited replay value; you can't get enough of it. Aside from the uptempo numbers this cd properly displays these women's talent. I would definitely recommend the cd to fans of good slow jams and midtempos; you'd just have to skip a couple of songs. 'Ice Cream' is an excellent debut from these singers and I look forward to hearing more from them in the near future. 4 stars.
The next Aaliyah
When I saw the video for "Ice Cream", I was indifferent to JS. But their "Love Angel" video got me addicted to them BIG time. I bought their CD a couple days after watching them on "Soul Train" and have played just about every day since. I wouldn't have wasted my time with Isyss' CD (although there was one song I really liked), but JS (and Aaliyah, too) have those rare CDs where I love most of the tracks. Before I bought this CD, I had mostly heavy metal CDs. Now, JS marks the start of a soul library for me.
As for the CD itself, I love most of the tracks with 2 notable exceptions. Track # 6 ("Half") has Kim singing some lyrics that would make her out to be a vandal and Kandy uses the "a" word. That's just not like girls raised on gospel. I realize they want revenge on a cheating lover, but they being too harsh on him. The other questionable track is # 7 - "Ice Cream" (remix); I think they should have instead done an instrumental version (with Kenny G on sax) of "Love Angel" -- gives a more grown-up feel to the song.
Otherwise, I absolutely love the CD and will play it till it won't play no more. But I love you more, Kim and Kandy. Maybe Isyss got dropped by Arista Records, but JS is here to stay. They've reminded the world that R & B is about soul, not rap. So, please buy the CD by any means necessary. They may not be in the top 40, but they just gettin' started, ya'll. One day, they'll be # 1 and you'll thank me. I look forward to more CDs including a Christmas one that'll showcase these angelic voices. And hey, it wouldn't hurt to have Timbaland and Missy Elliott for producers (in addition, of course, to Pied Piper and Mr. Biggs).
Maybe ya can't replace Aaliyah physically, but I think JS will pick up where Aaliyah left off in smooth R & B music.
Excellent Album
This album is the bomb,a little on the freaky side(R.Kelly, enough said)but great, it does not take too long to get used to,you can pop it in and let er' rip,This album shouldv'e did alot better than it did, but there was a lack of promotion, these girls have easy to listen to voices somewhat familiar sounding though.JS is R.kelly's new Changing faces but much hotter in lyrics and vocals. This is a worth buying cd it's worth every penny.
