Customer Reviews of Hymns
Excellent performance of little-known pieces Ralph Vaughan Williams was well known as the music editor of the English Hymnal. What is less well known is that in addition to his original tunes, such as Sine Nomine and Down Ampney, he also provided arrangements for a number of other tunes in both the English Hymnal and the later Songs of Praise. This recording gathers 22 of RVW's compositions and arrangements and offers them in a full and rich performance by the Cardiff Festival Choir under the direction of Owain Arwel-Hughes. I was impressed by the quality of the singing from what must be an amateur or semi-professional ensemble. Their performance is well-blended, disciplined, and articulate. Only in a few fortissimo passages do they lose some of their clarity (and, incidentally, reveal something of their regional dialect in their pronunciation). For the enthusiast of sacred music, and especially for the RVW enthusiast, this CD is a must have and, at this price, an incredible bargain.
