Customer Reviews of How Stella Got Her Groove Back
You GO Girl ! Affirmative, Renewing and Powerful story I read this back when it was first released by Ms.McMillian and had the pleasure of meeting my homegirl back in Detroit,MI. during her book tour. It's a moment I'll never forget. She's an awesome woman and a powerful writer. Terry takes you on a reading journey that's sure to leave an impression on you for days, weeks and years to come. I've been a fan of Terry's for years and eagerly await each of her novels.
In this story Stella Payne is in search of a renewed life. She's a successful Black woman and a single mother of one. She's decided to take a trip to Jamaica to center herself and gain a new lease on life. However, when she meets a younger Jamaican born Winston Shakespeare her life will never be the same. She in for the ride of her life with a man who sees beyond their age difference. Winston shows her a new way of seeing life and it's possibilities. The love they share is AWESOME and HOT! This is a refreshing story about a younger man longing to love and be with Stella, who's an older woman. It a celebration of love.
What I loved about the story and movie was the beauty shared by Stella and Winston. Their story shows that love can survive regardless of age. I also enjoyed it because so often we hear of older men with younger women and their stories run like a flood gate. How Stella Got Her Back lets us know that older women are glorious, beauitful and "ALL THAT." This story shows us that older women can be just as, if not more beauitful than their young counterparts. I applaud and celebrate these women for their true beauty and integrity. Thanks Terry for giving a voice to these women and men and their love.
Give Terry A Break
This summer I saw "Stella.." sitting on the shelves at Wal-Mart. Being a big fan of Terry McMillan I thought I'd buy it and put it on my bookshelf. See, I'd actually read the book via the local library when it first came out and to be honest, I wasn't feeling it. Yes, admittedly it was those overrun sentences, etc. But this time around, I LOVED IT! I had to realize the book was written based on the character's thought pattern. Stella was cool. Neurotic, but interesting nonetheless. And so, this time around, I consider it one of my favorites novels. I just don't understand all the Terry McMillan bashing that's going on like she's a terrible writer to be compared with, she can't write, yada, yada, yada. What gives? Give her a break. Her success, her style has opened up the Africian-American literary world to COUNTLESS (well, maybe you can count them) new and emerging Af-Am writers. We won't name them, but they know who they are. LOL! I'm saying all this to say, don't give up McMillan; she has a lot more to say (fingers crossed). And, yes, KEEP WRITING BOOKS PLEASE. Thank you very much!
A Fun Summer Story To Sit and Relax To!
I didn't read the book but I just listened to an audiobook recording of Terry McMillan's, How Stella Got Her Groove Back which was read by the author and I liked it and found it very entertaining and relaxing and I found myself wishing I was in Jamaica sitting by the pool or on a beach drinking a Pina Colada and I recommend How Stella Got Her Groove Back which I think is a great summer read or in my case a great summer listen and I recommend either the book or the audio recording and I think it would be great to read or listen to How Stella Got Her Groove Back while sitting on a beach or by a pool. The audiobook is abridged and I wish that there was an unabridged recording and I might even buy the paperback book and I also plan on renting the movie which I haven't seen yet, well anyway this audiobook is a keeper for sure! In this book Stella Payne is a 42 year old divorced hardworking sucessful career woman and loving dedicated mother to 11 year old Quincy and when Quincy goes to spend time with his father and Stella has time by herself she realizes that she is not as happy with her job as she thought and she is in a rut she decides she needs to get her groove back and goes off to Jamaica where she meets a handsome younger man named Winston (He is about 21 years old) and they immediately hit it off but Stella is feeling insecure about their age difference and Winston thinks she is being silly and that it is no big deal. I rate this audiobook a 5 because it was just a fun summer story to sit and relax to.
