Customer Reviews of Horatio Hornblower Collector's Edition
Tremendous Series This series inevitably gets compared to Sharpe, and with good reason. Both have excellent acting, characters you love, and the theme of a man low in British society rising up through the ranks to achieve greatness. Of course, HH is well funded, has tighter production, and much nicer transfer to DVD. <
> I have read the books, and there are some changes, but overall, I loved this series. The military aspects were my favorite. HH is easy to root for. Otherwise, you certainly catch the unglamorous view of the sailor-poor food, occasional threats of starvation, beatings, etc. <
> I highly recommend this series.
Sunk
Sad news everybody, there are no more Hornblower episodes in the pipeline. Despite its universal appeal, A&E have done what the Froggies failed to do and have sunk our hero. It would appear that they have withdrawn from the financing, or at least part financing of this quality production. In a television world of mediocracy at best and garbage at worse Hornblower came as a brief flash of quality entertainment at its best.A world of honour, loyalty and courage has been taken away from millions of fans worldwide.
Horatio Horblower
A&E's "Horatio Hornblower" is a high seas adventure marvel. It's so rare to find a made for TV production with such zeal and unique vision. And as such, I have no problem putting it on the same pedestal with "Dekalog" and "Band of Brothers." Ioan Grufford is perfectly cast in the role of Hornblower, creating the ultimate protagonist with his characters keen wits, humor, and admirable seafaring skills. His rise through the ranks is an enjoyment to watch, no doubt enhanced by the first rate cast of characters around him. Andrew Grieve had an extensive budget to work with here, and it shows up most effectively in the finished product. In fact, "Horatio Hornblower" features an actual working replica ship of the Napoleonic era.

>This DVD boxed set contains two additions from the original release; "Loyalty" and "Duty." Both are worthy predecessors to the collection, but with their boost in entertainment value and slight decrease in budget, there comes a minor issue of just how polished these two films feel. Of the original six, "The Duel" "The Fire Ships" "The Duchess and the Devil" and "Retribution" are standouts -- exceptionally well made, swashbuckling entertainment. (I think mentioning four of the six as standouts say something about this series...) Each one of the eight chapters is presented in a feature film type format, at roughly 100 minutes each. At the current price this works out to eight dollars a film, and for something that's far superior to most Hollywood blockbuster productions . . . it sound like the right price to me. An essential addition to anybody's DVD library.
