Customer Reviews of Holiday in the Sun
Cute, but .. As a Mary-Kate and Ashley fan, I buy their movies without viewing. So, when I learned about the newest one, "Holiday in the Sun," I got it as soon as possible. However, in comparison to "Our Lips Our Sealed" (my personal favorite) and "Winning London," this movie was weak.
It has a strange balance between trying to appeal to younger and more mature audiences. The girls try too hard to appeal to teen audiences. The guys they use are attractive, but they are so much older. Their parents were really young and very lenient. I found the part when Jordan sang to Alex to be a little over-the-top and incredibly stupid (this part reminds me of that fake soap from the Mickey Mouse Club).
There were too many loose ends: for example, Briana. At first, it seemed like Alex (Ashley) was really going to pay her back or something. But she's not even in the last 30 min. of the movie. If she's not an important character, they shouldn't play her off as one. Also, her voice got really annoying.
It seems like they started with one movie, got bored with it, and switched to another one. First, there was the whole "We wanted to go to Hawaii with our friends!" Then, they get to the Bahamas and do their partying and boyfriends thing. Fine. But, 60 minutes into the 88 minute movie, they decide to include antique robbers. What?? So, the movie totally switches focus (here comes my quip about Briana) and turns into another Mary-Kate and Ashley, by some miracle, save the day. While their chase and eventual capture of the theives is very unrealistic (for example, they go into town, ask someone if he's seen a "white haired man," and then, not only do they find him, he leads them to the ship with the stolen antiques on it), they do this in many movies, and I don't really mind it, assuming that it actually contributes to the story. But, I guess in this case, since there really is no story, you can't say that it doesn't contribute (does that even make sense?).
I also thought the ending was .. interesting. I guess they decided to start making a "other country" series or something, since they already have made 3 (4 counting this one) in other countries. Is it just me, or does it seem like they just came up with this idea now? Just something that bothered me.
However, with all of its inconsistencies and plots, it was a cute, enjoyable movie. There were some pretty good songs (my favorite being "Shades of Love"), and Mary-Kate and Ashley do have some cute clothes (but I did not like Ashley's shirt in the last scene - what was up with the bow and the writing on the back: it just didn't work together in my opinion). They managed a nice balance of matching and different oufits. A few things about the music: they played "One Girl Revolution" a little too much for me. I would've preferred if it were only in one scene, but oh well. Also, I like the Weezer version of "Island in the Sun" much more than the Empty Trash f. Mary-Kate & Ashley version - I don't understand why they played one in the movie and featured a different one on the soundtrack.
This is a good movie to put on if you have a lot of people over (and it gets a lot of, "Oh my gosh, THAT'S Mary-Kate & Ashley??"). It's mindless and can be fun to watch. However, if you're looking for a really good-quality Mary-Kate and Ashley movie (wow, I can't believe I just said that), check out "Our Lips Are Sealed" or one of their other ones.
My personal favorite part of the movie was Keegan. She seemed to be a lot smarter than anyone else in the movie, and I loved her sarcasm. She was so cute, and I would have loved to see her more. I also enjoyed Ashley's disproving of popular sayings. They should've had more of those and less of the "I feel the need-" "The need for speed."
And while many said it was like an 88-minute Atlantis ad (which I agree, it was), that part didn't really bother me. In fact, my family is now planning on going there in March -- I wonder if Mary-Kate & Ashley get some kind of bonus for that?? (Actually, we have been planning on going there for a while, but it's fun to tell people that we were inspired by a Mary-Kate and Ashley movie.)
*~Great Movie~*
This is a very good move for anybody who likes Mary-Kate and Ashley, and who enjoys a good mystery. I bought this movie to take on a road trip, & watched it every bit of the way. You should buy it. :)
A great movie!
Alex(Ashley) and Madison(Mary-kate) Stewart, are two pretty fifteen girls who want to go with their high school on a trip to Hawaii, but their parents take them on a family vacation to the Bahamas! When they get their, its none stop action fun. Riding on Sea-Doos, swimming with dolphins, scuba diving, riding horses, going down water slides, and to go shopping? The girls ride on mopeds to shops with Caribbean dresses and straw hats. And, of couse, the girls have hot guys too!Alex falls in love with Jordan, a boy who works at their hotel, if a sneaky girl does not steal him first! And Madison has a huge crush on a boy named Scott, untill she finds out Griffen Grayson likes her! In the end, the girls get the boys of their dreams, and wind up dancing in a beautful beach party.
