There can be only one
In "Highlander", a war between Immortals is being fought in present day New York. The two main cntenders are good guy Connor McLeod (Christopher Lambert) and bad guy Krugan (Clancy Brown). As the body count rises (other Immortals are also in town for The Prize) a police forensic scientist (Roxanne Hart) begins to figure out what is going on. <

>When this film was relesed in 1986 it was really something that no one had really seen before. It was a martial arts movie, fantasy, thriller, horror, punk movie all roled up into one film. A lot of critics were hard on it because they said it was too difficult to understand. But based on the fact that there is such a dedicated following seems to prove other wise. Yes, there are some un answered questions like what decides who is Immortal and who isn't, and how did anyone figure out what The Prize is, and how to get it? The film was also attacked for it's violence. You see, theonly was an Immortal can die is by decapitation, so every fight ends with someone's head flying through the air. I don't see what is wrong with that. <

>The look of the film is very low budget, and that works. New York looks nasty and dirty, and most of the characters look like they just walked off the set of "The Road Warrior" (I loved Krugan's outfit). The special effects and crazy camera angles were really cool, you can tell that director Russell Mulcahy was a major 1980s music video director. I loved the look and feel of the movie. The fight scenes are all well choerographed and always fun to watch. <

>The acting is where is falls slightly short. Of course Sean Connery can do no wrong. Though he is given little screen time, he certainly makes his presence felt as Connor's teacher Jaun Rameriz. He is warm and funny, perfect counter point to Connor's broding. Clancy Brown's evil Krugan is the life of the party, stealing every scene he is in with a way over the top performance. Think of him as a cross between The Joker and Freddy Kruger. Then we run into our problem, the heros. Roxanne Hart is just ok, barley registering, but at least she's cute. I am sorry, but Christopher Lambert can not act his way out of a paper bag. he is the cinimatic version of David Hasseloff; a bad actor with very good luck with projects. His voice is gravelly and he barley can speak any English. There is a kind of charisma, but it is not very convincing when he and Hart are supposed to fall in love. <

>Still, I loved it for it's original ideas and over the top presentation. Ignore the sequals and TV shows, this was originally supposed to be a stand alone film, so treat it like so.

Now this is what I call a masterpiece
This is the original picture based on the story by Gregory Widen. It is a story of passion, love and faith. It have a brilhant story and an amazing cast! This, folks is a truly masterpiece of enormous proportions.

Absolute Classic
Has anyone noticed that in the very moment that Mercury sings "When love must die" (in "Who wants to live forever") you see Heather's face - and she is an old woman? This is magical filmmaking. This is just one of the many little gems in this movie, which is essentially about the loneliness of a man trapped in immortality - a fate he didn't choose and has trouble to accept. The imagery is at times like a video clip (due to Russel Mulcahy's past) but sometimes it radiates a melancholy which I believe is without parallel in other action movies. If you don't like it the first time around - watch it again anyways. Listen to the interplay of image and score (Queen!!) - this is the major strength of the movie.
