Customer Reviews of High Fidelity
A Hilarious and Realistic View on Relationships High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, is not just another sappy book about relationships gone bad, but a refreshingly realistic account of relationships through the eyes of man. Hornby's exquisite and hilarious style of writing keeps the pages turning and the reader laughing and nodding as they relate to, and gain insight on, different aspects of love and life.
Nick Hornby does a spectacular job at defining each character and bringing them to life. Rob Fleming seems to jump off the pages and speaks of his love life, or lack of at times, in such vivid detail and emotion, it's as if Rob himself is sitting in your living room recounting the confused drama that is his life.
High Fidelity is a definite must read for all who have been in relationships, or are thinking of beginning one. This novel will give you some understanding of the male point-of-view as well as the hardships, confusion, and the sometimes backwards reality that seems to get mixed up in the stereotypical notion of love. All of which is portrayed through the hilarious and blunt writing style of one of my "top five favorite" authors, Nick Hornby.
Relationship HELL !!!
In High Fidelity, Hornby successfully walks the fine line between humor and sadness, hope and despair, and is so accurate in his observations that it's easy to forget that this was his first novel. The scene in which Rob tells his mother that Laura has left him will resonate with any aging single person who's ever dreaded telling a parent that he or she has failed at yet another relationship. Hornby's rendering of Rob's store, its employees, and its patrons is one of the most dead-on descriptions that I've encountered in contemporary fiction. That Hornby knows and loves the musical snobs that haunt such places is evident in the characterization of Rob and his two employees. As a person who has spent far too much time and money at record stores just like Championship Vinyl, I can honestly say that Nick Hornby has, as well, and he captures the atmosphere far better than I could ever hope to. Nick Hornby knows and loves music, and his affection and knowledge shines through on every page. I recommend this book highly, along with 2 other quick Amazon reads: The Losers' Club by Richard Perez (also about relationships) and WILL@epicqwest.com by Tom Grimes (it blew my mind: a very funny book!)
For All Losers Out There
There's a great passage in High Fidelity where Rob talks about all of the sad songs about broken hearts he has listened to in his life. He's listened to them over and over thousands of times, and he wonders if he likes them because he's so miserable or if he's so miserable because he has listened to those songs. When I read the passage, I just about died laughing. I've asked the same question of myself, only substituting books for songs.
In a way, High Fidelity is a great book because of what this passage is talking about, though. It's a novel written about a loser for losers (like me) to read. Rob is a sad and miserable thirty-five year old who refuses to grow up, and we can relate. I could, at least. Nick Hornby knows who his audience is. His audience is people who have been through spoiled by the society in which they've been raised and haven't yet learned how to actually live. Rob is this person and he ultimately begins to grow up, and he gives all losers some hope. High Fidelity is an engaging, funny, and pretty wise novel that a lot of people can relate to.
