As a leader of up to four of the finest fictional soldiers in Great Britain's Royal SAS, you must outfit and lead your men deep into enemy territory, fulfilling mission goals that rely more on stealth and speed than a quick trigger finger. By the way, your men can be picked off with one bullet, so watch where and how you step.
Since you are leading four individual troops, you might guess controlling them would be problematic. You'd be right. Every button on the Dreamcast controller is used multiple ways, and it will take a while to get used to controlling your troops. Thankfully, most controls can be accessed via a Dreamcast keyboard, which lessens the control problems. If you survive learning the interface, you'll find that Hidden and Dangerous's movielike musical score and atmosphere (thanks to nice graphics) make it quite absorbing, especially compared to the similar Rainbow Six.
Oddly, your men have a tendency to become trapped in corners, get run over by trains, and react very slowly when getting shot at. Occasionally, they'll float on nothing at all. These are all bugs that were in the PC version and should've been squashed before being released on the Dreamcast. Such sloppiness really does hurt the overall fun in Hidden and Dangerous. Instead of bringing home the Congressional Medal of Honor, the game scores a Purple Heart. --Mark Brooks
Pros:
- Interesting plot and nice graphics
- Soundtrack sounds like an old Hollywood WWII film
- Once you get used to the interface, Hidden and Dangerous can become quite absorbing
- Ludicrously steep learning curve--unless you have a Sega keyboard
- Subordinate troops lack adequate artificial intelligence
- No improvements over the PC version

Customer Reviews of Hidden and Dangerous
It's a lot like....... Rainbow Six This game is not a first person shooter. This game is not like Metal Gear or Quake. This is a squad based strategy game. You can't run into a room or an open field and just start blasting away at hundreds of people. I suppose like real war, you quite often have to use your entire four man squad to subdue a one man patrol by shooting him in the back. (It's okay, they're all Nazis.) The AI is smart. The enemies are as strong as you are. In other words if you get shot once or twice, you die. So now your asking why would anyone want to play this game? You get to control a four person sqaud (from a FPS or 3rd Person perspective) through several challenging missions in Europe during a WWII. This includes rescuing troops and blowing up bridges. You have to use timing, stealth, teamwork, and cunning to play this game. Why is it a lot like Rainbow Six and Spec Ops? Well, you can download a copy of Rainbow Six or Spec Ops from Take 2 Interactive corporate web site (in other words, althougth I don't think they produced Rainbow Six, I think they use the same game engine). The game also pays attention to detail. The music (when it sporadically plays) along with the atmospheric audio and visual effects (like rain and fog) make this game a keeper. I have heard rumors that Spec Ops (which uses a similar, if not the same engine as this game) doesn't run well on the Playstation. Well, if you own a Dreamcast or a PC with a 3D accelerator, it runs just fine.
NOTE: You can download a demo of this game, but the options like weapon selection are severely limited.
Interesting but hard.
I had this game for about 3 days before I returned it. It had it's moments. The concept is great and controls are decent, although I don't think anything will ever top a mouse for a first person and third person game. Without some sort of auto help to aim this game is pretty hard. You just can't aim and react fast enough with a standard DC controller. The AI of your mates who follow you around is horrible too. Always getting killed or stuck somewhere. Rent this before you buy it. Rainbow Six is a much better game.
Awesome game.
This game is an awesome WW2 game. This game is very fun to play. I probably like medal of honor better though.
