Customer Reviews of Hey, Mr. Producer! The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh
A Musical Feast! This lavish concert reproduces scenes and musical numbers from many shows that Cameron Mackintosh has produced over the years.
Highlights are the 'Side By Side By Sondheim' segment which brings together the original cast members of Millicent Martin,Julia McKenzie and David Kernan to thunderous applause, and the knowledge that the Queen is in the audience is a thrilling thought indeed.
Julie Andrews hosts the event, and while Liz Robertson takes the stage as Eliza in the 'My Fair Lady' sequence, one can't help thinking that the role belongs forever to Julie.
Also of note is Bernadette Peter's thrilling rendition of 'Being Alive' from 'Company',and the great rendition of 'The Phantom of the Opera',with Colm Wilkinson and Lisa Vroman.
Lea Salonga,Maria Friedman,Ruthie Henshall and Millicent Martin all lend their considerable vocal talents to the Sondheim classic 'You Could Drive A Person Crazy',and the thrilling 'Cats',with Elaine Paige as Grizabella is great.
The finale of 'Les Miserables' with a cast including Colm Wilkinson,Michael Ball,Ruthie Henshall,Lea Salonga,Philip Quast,Hal Fowler,Tammi Jacobs,Teddy Kempner and Marie Zamora is a perfect conclusion.
This montage of Cameron's best productions for Broadway and the West End is a must for all musical fans.
Utter magic.
An Amazing Night for Theatre...
Being a huge fan of musicals, I bought this one for a few of the key people, hoping the rest would be good, too. I was NOT disappointed. For anyone who thinks that Bernadette Peters is anything other than one of the most talented and capable performers in musical theatre today, I pray we never meet. She is simply amazing. Her "Unexpected Song" is the highlight of this video....and hell, to look and sing that well in her 50's.... Maria Friedman's "How Many Tears" is gorgeous.
Ellen Greene singing "Somewhere That's Green" and "Suddenly Seymour" is amazing. The emotion and heart she puts in that song reminds you of what great theatre is about. Lea Salonga was wonderful as always, as were Elaine Paige and Ruthie Henshall. My complaints: The Up-With-People-ized version of "Day By Day", that woman speak-singing "I Get A Kick Out Of You", that thing from "Lauder", the Carousel Ballet which goes on forever, and anything with the warbling of Colm Wilkinson. In all, the show is wonderful and the good points overshadow the bad.
Great!
Okay, so it is pretty much the same as the VHS version, but if you like DVDs better, buy this. The sound and picture are very good, as is the show itself. I absolutely loved every single performance! Some of the shows I have never seen, but I was glad that they were actually acted out instead of just having the actors standing there singing as if they were in a concert (Les Miserables the 10th Anniversary Concert, for example). Overall, I give this 5 stars.
