In 1841, David Haviland and his family set sail for Limoges, France in search of a place to build his own china factory. In 1865, David Haviland appointed his oldest son, Charles, to manage his Limoges facilities while David went to work with the D.G. & D. Haviland firm. In 1879, the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes decided to replace the existing White House china. The dinner service arrived in 1880 with a final cost of $3120. David Haviland died in 1879. Citing creative differences, Charles and Theodore decided to dissolve their joint ownership in 1891. Charles retained leadership of the original company and Theodore opened Theodore Haviland, Limoges. Charles Haviland died in 1921. In 1926 and 1929, kiln fires destroyed part of the Haviland and Co.'s factory and several storage warehouses. The company closed its doors in 1931. Theodore Haviland died in 1919. Control of Theodore Haviland, Limoges was left to Theodore's son, William who later won exclusive rights to Haviland & Co.'s name and backstamps. Production of Haviland products was later moved to Pennsylvania.
