Customer Reviews of Haunting Fear
Brinke Stevens delivers her finest acting performance Haunting Fear's plot (a cheating husband tries to frighten his wife to death to collect her insurance and escape the country with his mistress) has been used in countless erotic thriller/b-horror movies. However, Haunting Fear deftly avoids viewer expectations, after apparently setting up Jan-Michael Vincent's character, who is obviously attracted to the wife, Victoria (the always bewitching Brinke Stevens) as the hero who will rescue Stevens. Everyone I know who has seen this movie was surprised by the ending. As a Brinke fan, this is the movie I pick to loan friends who have asked me to see one of her movies.
Haunting Fear is, for the most part, very well acted. Although "name" actors Vincent and Karen Black are awful, the b-movie regulars are all quite convincing in their roles. Surprisingly, Delia Sheperd is great as the murderous mistress who drives the always dependable Jay Richardson, appropriately sleazy as the husband, to murder. Stevens, however, makes the movie the gem it is. Before Haunting Fear delivers its twists and appears to be cliched, Stevens' heartfelt performance makes the viewer care for Victoria, the normal woman who's life is unravelling due to constant nightmares, and, as a result, keep watching. Normally, Stevens plays the evil sexpot role, here filled by Shepard, and she is quite effective cast against type.
Haunting Fear's only flaws are some below-par gore effects and a "past-life regression" sequence, which slows the film's pace to a crawl and seems tacked on only to give Black a part. Perhaps this should have lowered the film a star. However, Stevens' excellent performance and unearthly beauty make this an endearing b-film.
I have to admit, though, I did find it hard to believe that someone married to a woman as gorgeous as Brinke would even want to look at another woman, much less cheat on her with someone suffering from silicone infestation.
The Haunting Fear - Some Of Brinke's Best
The Haunting Fear is possibly Brinke Stevens' best performance.
A very dramatic buried alive type movie, it's the story of a couple. The wife is having terrible nightmares and seems to be losing her mind more and more.
Brinke plays the coolest mad woman.
A sequel may be coming out in the future.
