Customer Reviews of Handel's Young Messiah
The lights in Westminster Abbey... ...are powered by Handel spinning in his grave. <

>My uncle, a semi-professional opera singer, introduced me to this monstrosity years ago. He had something better than the CD - he had a videotape of the performances. And oh my, were they bad. They were so bad, they actually wrapped all the way back around to funny. <

>This album suffers from the worst flaws of "contemporary Christian" music. Off-key soloists. Strange instrumentations. Soulless, metronomic rhythms. Weird phrasings ("Eh-heh-VREE va-ha-LEE"). And earnestness that makes your teeth hurt. <

>The capper was the repeated insistence by the performers that this was exactly the way Handel would have done things if he had access to modern instruments. EXACTLY. <

>With so many fine recordings of "The Messiah" available, why on earth would you choose this one?
Upbeat and uplifting
I have enjoyed this CD for over 15 years. I now find that I have to order another copy since mine is completely worn out. I have loaned it to friends over the years who have subsequently gone and bought their own copies. It's great to hear the master's works done in a different way so as to really make one think about what you are listening to and enjoying. If you are not a purist, give this upbeat version a listen.
I'm not a Handel Purist
But, honestly, this album stinks. I'm listening to it right now to be sure that I'm not unduly biased in my review - but a couple of words spring to mind, but foremost are Casiotone and Muzak - and that's being uncharitable to both. It's not to say that some talented people aren't featured here, but the backing music is just way off course.
