These guys are a great team Years after it's release, I still enjoy this album a lot. I'm also still surprised that this one wasn't a bigger hit than it was. There are some VERY good songs on here. My favorites: I'll Always Be With You, Blue Continental, and Down That Highway.
There's been some talk that Tommy and Jack are working together on a new album. I hope they are. Hallucination deserves a follow-up!
Mid-tempo melodic chemistry
Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades, after lengthy histories with their respective classic bands Styx and Night Ranger, formed a supergroup at the end of the 1980s called Damn Yankees along with Ted Nugent. After two amazing melodic hard rock albums from this band, who are still one of my all-time favorites, they never put out another album. But in 1995, three years after the second and final Damn Yankees album "Don't Tread", Shaw and Blades decided to put out an album of their own. The result is something markedly different than the hard-rocking Damn Yankees.
When I first listened to this album 9 years ago, I was a bit disappointed due to the lack of hard rock on the album. Over time, however, it definitely grew on me. This is an album that showcases the melodic vocal talents of Tommy and Jack. While plenty of the songs are catchy, none of them rock as hard as a Damn Yankees rocker. The opening track "My Hallucination" showcases a sound that is as heavy as this album gets. A catchy tune with a somewhat political message, this is a strong leadoff track for this type of album.
Melodic highlights are plentiful on this album. Some of the uptempo track highlights are "Come To Be My Friend" and "How You Gonna Get Used To This", while "Don't Talk To Me Anymore" and "The Night Goes On" are among the softer track highlights. Songs like "Blue Continental" and "Down That Highway" bring to light southern blues rock. All of the tracks showcase the vocal range and singing ability of these two fine artists.
Enjoy this album for its musicianship rather than to rock out to. Don't get me wrong--plenty of the tracks are quite catchy, but don't expect that hard rocking electric guitar solo on this album. Acoustic guitars are plentiful throughout the album. If you can make that adjustment, I guarantee you will enjoy this album more. I for one still enjoy listening to it after all these years. Recommended for mid-tempo melodic rock fans and fans of these singers and the more mellow stuff from their respective bands.
An Underrated Gem!!!!
I'm so glad I found this CD on Amazon.com! This had been stolen from me a few years ago and I've been searching for it in second hand CD stores and bargain bins rather than paying ful price again for it, but I miss the blend of meoldy and harmony that I have to give in and get it!
There is just an aura of good fun on this CD. It always seemed to me that Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw were just sitting across from each other smiling at how easy it seemed to do this. Like two old friends jamming on a porch to old Beatles tunes, such as the song "My Hallucination" mentions.
My personal favorite though was "This Is the End", The Doors had a morose and maudlin song of similar title and this song was such a contrast to me that it has always stuck with me. I got the feeling that eventhough they were saying goodbye, it wasn't the last we'd be hearing of them.
