Customer Reviews of HP dvd740i 16x Internal DVD Writer with Lightscribe
Worst Drive I have ever used This is the worst hard drive I have ever used. I purchesed one, just to return it right away for not being able to read cd's (took me 12 tries to just to get it to download my motherboard drivers off the cd!), I then payed for another one and within 8 DVD burns and 18 lightscribe burns it stopped working completely! This drive would only burn using Nero Burning software and nothing else. <
>I would NOT recommend this drive to anybody!
Avoid this junk
Mine made 2 DVDs and 0 out of 10 attempts to burn a
<
>Audio CD. It runs horrendously warm and if you tryed
<
>to use light scribe right after burning the DVD it
<
>gave a "internal error" error.
<
>
<
>Then it started giving "Track Following Errors" and wouldn't
<
>read or write a CD/DVD, home made or commercial.

<
>So I took it back to Best Buy. They no longer carried the 740i
<
>so I said what the hey, I'll get the 840i
<
>
<
>Well so far it will read and burn a disk, but if you
<
>don't wait at least 5 minutes after burning a disk
<
>and try to burn a light scribe image it over heats
<
>and gives the same "Internal error" message...

>HP needs to resolve this issue.....
obnoxiously picky about media - HP support is horrible.
I bought this drive a month ago, and never got lightscribe to work. It burned discs fine, but the lightscribe just kept saying "unrecognized media" or other variants of the same error. This was with the HP included disc that came with the drive. I bought some verbatim discs from walmart. Same error. I gave up, tried to deal with HP's support on the matter to get it replaced, and was eventually bounced around enough non-english speaking people and different 1-800 numbers I gave up and was just going to forget about lightscribe. However I was at best buy today and noticed some Memorex brand discs on sale, so figured I'd try them. Bought a pack, and lo and behold, the lightscribe worked on them first try. So I guess the drive is just ridiculously picky about the media you use. Be careful buying this drive, as it has caused me frustration, but I guess it worked in the end as long as I buy the memorex discs.
