Customer Reviews of Gypsy (1993) / TV Movie
It was okay I saw the origional GYPSY on t.v. once and loved it! But I hated the leading lady. I heard of this one,and wanted to get it. I thought it was going to be great, with the great Bette Midler and all! I bought this video at Half Price Books for 4 dollars! I thought I was so lucky to see this movie right as I was walking out. I came home and watched it with my twin brother. He liked it. I thought it gust passed the point of bad and okay. For one thing Bette Midler was horrible!! I have the recording with Bernadette Peters and loved it! But Bette Midler rouined it! She was too nosie and didn't hold notes long enough and that hair! Oh, that hair. It would be one thing if it was a natrul red color, but it was red almost pink! And the person for Herby was okay until I haerd him sing. Wich he can't do. Everyone else was great! But the two leading people were not good at all singing wise but they were looked wonderful! I hope you still give this movie a chance, I mean it's great just not the two geading people (of course I'm comparing them to Bernadette Peters, the Broadway diva, and John Dossette). But all in all I like it better than the origional!
Major disappointment
Though this "Gypsy" gets points or point for being the closest to the stage script, Midler is a two-dimensional battle-axe in a role that is one of the richest in American drama. There are no relationships in the film, no love, no nothin'. Rose is just a harpy stripped of any emotion. Anyone who saw Tyne Daly, Angela Lansbury, Ethel Merman or even the miscast Rosalind Russell will find this wanting. Particularly a shame as Daly was a major television star she wasn't used; or that Midler, who's a delightful comic personality, didn't have the chops, but this is a "Gypsy" only for those who don't know the work. If Midler is the only Rose you've seen she may cut it; for the rest of us, a major disapppointment.
great show
*i thought that this movie was very good......after seeing it on Broadway a few weeks ago with Bernadette Peters, i decided to rent the video and watch it again.....although Bette Midler is not as good as Bernadette (in my opinion) the movie was still very well done......this is an amazing show......and i am looking forward to when we put this show on this spring at my highschool.....i feel that if u would like to see Gypsy, but u do not want to travel to NYC to see it--u should buy this video*
