Customer Reviews of Gunsmoke - The Gold Mine
Matt has to go rescue Miss Kitty from a wild mining town Unlike the other volumes I have come across so far in the "Gunsmoke" series, "The Gold Mine" (Episode #396, December 25, 1965), is an hour-long black & white episode, and not a couple of half-hour shows. Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake) is given a gold mine by an old friend and so she travels by herself to the town of Pickax. There she finds an old man and his sons who say the land belongs to them and they are more than willing to fight for it. Meanwhile, Matt (James Arness) learns what Kitty is up to and sends Thad Greenwood (Roger Ewing) to keep an eye on her. But the bad guys shot Thad and Marshall Dillon has to ride in and save the day. However, the showdown is rather average, so this is not really a first-rate "Gunsmoke" episode. Kitty should have none better than to go out to Pickax by her self. After all, Dodge City is the last bastion of justice on the frontier and she goes off to a mining town by herself. Final aside: It is interesting to think that once upon a time there would actually be new television episodes airing on Christmas night!
Gunsmoke episode featuring Kitty Russell
"The Gold Mine" -- After being given a gold mine by an old friend, Kitty Russell travels alone to the rough-and-tumble town of Pickax. When Matt Dillon learns where Kitty has gone, he sends Thad Greenwood to look after her. But Thad is shot and soon Marshall Dillon is off to Pickax. First aired on December 25, 1965. (Black & White) (In a bit of confusion, Amazon.com lists this as both a color and B&W episode -- although this is probably Gunsmoke's final season in black and white.) Approximate run time is 52 minutes.
