Customer Reviews of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
The Best Ever This is the best movie ever! After getting this in the mail, I watched it 5 times over the weekend.
Historic film of the era
The films premise is on inter racial relations and marriage being addressed in the late 1960's. Like so many other issues of the time that examined the new thinking of the period, 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' is emblematic of the period.

>The film was made at the beginning of the so called 'Summer of Love' 1967 in San Francisco- which in itself is meaningful. New ideas and concepts such as drug use, abortion, the civil rights struggle, the war in southeast Asia, young people of that generation reexamining their parents and values and defining theirs.

>The film is important as a social statement of the era. Its fun to listen to the dated music, attitudes, clothes, language, the hair styles- all vintage and iconic for the period.

>Hepburn is wonderful, and Tracy who was dying at the time is poignant. Poitier is brilliant as well.

>A film that is certainly dated now- but nonetheless makes me remember that time in my life as a teenager.
Kathryn Houghton is Katherine Hepburn's neice, did you know that?
I wonder how she got the part??? Duh! Could never picture Kate and Spencer doin' the deed, as legend tells us they had a torrid love affair for many, many years. Even though Spence was still married with 5 count ' em, five children. Anyway, I saw this 40 years ago, I thought it was hokey then, and I think my original opinion of it still stands. Of course if Dr. Sidney Portier showed up on my stoop, I'd certainly let him in. The white girl's parents are extremely wealthy, and the girl is kinda goofy, I think Sidney can do better. Although Sidney is a Doctor, his parents are from modest means, not poor, but nice working class people. This was considered very explosive material back then and still is to this day, should the races intermarry? What do you think?
