"Green Left Weekly" does indeed do an efficient and clear job of demolishing the lies so often told by Western governments, school courses, and the mass media concerning the manner in which Western governments operate. Like "Socialist Worker," a few reads of "Green Left Weekly" will show clearly what the real aims behind government policy in the imperialist countries are. It also relates these aims to the problems of environmental destruction, war, and the increasing gap between the haves and have-nots with an ease that only comes with an understanding of Western politics not found in the mainstream media.

Whilst "Green Left Weekly" is effective at disproving and rebutting the mainstream media's explanation for government decisions on such issues as privatisation, refugees, the environment, transport and taxation, it is politically extremely dubious because of its support for Cuba. Cuba might have made some social gains since the revolution, but efforts to show that Cuba has a wonderful environmental record and a completely democratic political system fail under any critical examination. There is never any mention of the privileges given to the Cuban ruling class in recent reforms, nor does "Green Left Weekly" ever mention the concentration camps Castro set up for political prisoners - or that Castro only used the term "socialist" to ally with the state capitalist USSR. Similarly, "Green Left Weekly" has supported the regime in Vietnam, even though that country has embraced the market, as well as giving false excuses for policy changes in China even after Mao embraced the US in the 1970s.

Indeed, "Green Left Weekly" is obsessed beyond necessity with the overthrow of the US government, and tends to relate the struggle against capitalism to the struggle against the US exclusively. It does not understand in any meaningful way the capitalist nature of Stalinism - it pretends to with some half-hearted criticism of Stalin.

"Green Left Weekly" is just as preachy as "Socialist Worker." Moreover, most of what it says is extremely repetitive and one ceases to enjoy reading the newspaper after reading a few copies: the same arguments and words are present today as were when "Green Left Weekly" was first published in 1990, suggesting that the authors lack any knowledge of how to express the undoubted need for a completely different political system to achieve sustainability and eliminate gross inequality.

Not as good as "International Socialist Review," but reading "Green Left Weekly" will still make you think more critically about the imperialist plutocracies' claims to be the highest level of human freedom.
