Customer Reviews of Greatest Story Ever Told
Um, amazing? Okay so, the first Lawrence Arms album I bought was Apathy & Exhaustion, because I had downloaded songs on it that I liked. What I found was that I really favored the more melodic vocalist over the more shouty aggressive one. A while later I found A Guided Tour of Chicago in a used cd store, so I got it. I was not impressed with it, and I realize that it's considered one of the best punk rock albums like ever but I didn't find anything in it, the vocals were bothersome, and it just left a lot to be desired. So when I heard The Greatest Story Ever Told was getting pseudo-raving reviews from indie zines I was intrigued, but was hesitant to purchase this album.
BUT I DID. And it's amazing. This album is the pinnacle of their career, the vocal arrangements are awesome, it flows smoothly and it is exactly the direction I wanted to see them pursue.
This band is amazing.
Ever seen them live? No? Well, DO SO. Anyhoo, I have loved Lawrence Arms for ever. This album has creative, thoughtful lyrics, and a utterly delightful circus theme, even though the title sounds a lot like a Jesus/Bible reference. Chris is a lot better singer than I initially gave him credit for. They're from Chicago too, and Chicago bands are the best. This band is no exception. The first and last tracks, the intro and outro, are awesome, and make the CD that much better. I admit, it all starts to sound the same until WHAM!!, you hear songs like On With the Show, March of the Elephants, and The Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure. Brendan Kelly is amazing, he has the best singing voice, but Chris is good too.Oh, and the song Wishful Puppeteer is, like, incredible.
Amazing Stuff
Ok so first of all I am a huge Lawrence arms fan. I started by hearing "First Eviction Notice" Which is on apathy. The lyrics in that song are second to none. Anyway I love all thier stuff, but this cd is a cullmanation of everything I love about TLA. True there are a few duds, (March of the elephants, alert the audience, hesitation station) But everything else on this cd makes up for those few Ten Fold. The lyrics are soo good epecily in "A wishful puppeteer, The revisionist, and fireflies." This cd is a lot more melodic than thier previous efforts, and I for one like it. If you want a harder LA cd buy Ghost Stories or check out their split with shady veiw. I know apathy is a lot of people's favorite (it's up their for me too) but this one shady view and ghost stories are the best. As far as 5 star songs go Shady's got them all. Anyway I've seen these guys in concert and let me tell you they don't disapoint. Although Brendan was EXTREMELY drunk they ripped all the songs they played. So if you don't have this cd buy it right now, don't listen to the chump who gave it a 1 star, (I don't understand why you would want an album that sounds the same as one they've already made) Anyway judge for yourself, Peace.
