Customer Reviews of Great Russian Composers: Rachmaninov
Superficial A short and superficial video of the great pianist, composer, conductor Sergei Vassilievich Rachmaninoff.
The comment by Mr. Gontarev regarding the spelling of his name is wrong. Although the name would ordinarily be transliterated into English as Rachmaninov *today*, and one does see that variant spelling, the spelling ending in "v" is *incorrect*.
Sergei Rachmaninoff left his home country. He had homes in Europe and in the United States. The transliteration of his name was the transliteration *he* preferred: French. This is perhaps not so surprising. He performed a great deal in Europe, and was as much a citizen of Europe as of the United States. In fact, he made it clear in print, after being condemned by the Soviet press as being "a violent enemy of Soviet Russia," that "Only one place is closed to me, and that is my home country - Russia."
On all of his official documents and in all of his letters and other signed papers, he signed his name Sergei Rachmaninoff. His United States citizenship is to Sergei Rachmaninoff. The recordings released during his lifetime were labeled as being by Rachmaninoff. The performances were billed as being by Rachmaninoff. Similarly, his wife Natalya adopted the spelling of her name as Natalie Rachmaninoff. The gravestone in Westechester County, NY, reads Sergei and Natalie Rachmaninoff. His papers, manuscripts and personal collection of recordings, now at the Library of Congress, are in the Rachmaninoff collection.
The official organization that honors him is the "Rachmaninoff Society." The president of the Rachmaninoff Society is longtime champion of his music, pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, and the Society includes living members of Rachmaninoff's family.
In the United States, the spelling adopted by the person and used in legal documents are recognized by the courts as the *correct* spelling. There is absolutely no doubt and no arguing that the spelling *he* selected, the name *he* chose to be known by, was spelled Rachmaninoff.
It is true that one commonly sees his name spelled with a "v" by record companies today, but he never spelled his name that way and it is only since the 1960s that record companies have adopted that spelling. Perhaps Mr. Rachmaninoff would choose to spell his name with a "v" if he were living today. But it is, in my opinion, a disservice by others to impose their revisionistic spelling against his wishes, and without the permission of his direct descendants. And it is unfortunate that the record companies have decided to participate in this unjustified revisionism, as it complicates the efforts of those who wish to locate recordings.
IT'S RACHMANINOV! Not Rachmaninoff.
I only have to rectify - for your reviewers - the huge but deep-rooted mistake: this RUSSIAN composer's name should be transliterated from Russian as RACHMANINOV, or even better - RAKHMANINOV and not with this obsolete old-fashioned French-inspired ending "-off". Please, please let's collectively return to this great man and the greatest composer his true identity! And let's continue enjoying his great music!
JUST A GENERIC BIOGRAPHY, NOTHING INTERESTING
A huge disappointment, no live footage of Rachmaninoff, nothing but a short biography. 30 minutes only. A waste of money.
