Customer Reviews of Grainger Edition, Volume 2: Songs For Baritone
Comfort food for the ears. 'Songs for Baritone' by Percy Grainger, the second in a Chandos series, 'The Grainger Edition' is simply lovely classical 'musik'. If 'Tommy' by The Who is aged Scotch and Mozart's 'Requium' is Lobster and Schubert's Lieder are many vitages of fine wines, Grainger's songs strike me as being mashed potatoes and meat loaf. They don't have the high octane emotional punch of either 'Pinball Wizard' or Beethoven's Nineth symphony, but they make you feel good when you listen to them. I will even go so far as to say that they make you feel better than listening to my very favorite 20th century songwriter, Kurt Weill, but then Weill's work has qualities Grainger lacks. The best thing one can say about this album is that it leaves you wanting more!
