It's cartoons, jeeez. I'm more intelligent than that. What isn't noted about this book is that it's mostly in cartoon format. And it isn't actually called LEAVING HOME, it's called DIC AND DONNA ARE LEAVING HOME. It's a long comic strip (that isn't really funny) about Donna, who prepares well for living on her own, and her friend Dic, who doesn't. Donna's adventures are your advice.
This book would have been quite good if it left out all the cartoony nonsense. It's not cute, and it doesn't help get the point across. The actual information, though, is great. It covers the various places you'll need to call and what questions to ask them, and gives details on setting up bank accounts, registering your car, understanding car insurance, etc. It's extremely helpful information for high school or college grads ready to go it alone for the first time. Example: I'm a graduating college senior who's getting married and moving out of state, and I found all the car insurance info and the question lists very helpful.
However, the cartoon format is so dumb I couldn't keep the book. I'd recommend you get it out of the library or borrow it from a friend, and write everything down or make photocopies of the handy little (non-cartoony) worksheets in the back.
Not too shabby, but...
While this book may be great for a high school senior about to go to college, as a college senior about to graduate I found it lacking. The book uses a comic/cartoon graphic theme to communicate its messages, but about half of those are ridiculous hyperbole of how not to go about moving. However, many of the lists are helpful, and there are some worksheets in the back that can come in handy while moving. The whole thing takes about 15-20 minutes to read.

Every aspect of independent living is surveyed including such issues as signing a lease, utility deposits, renter's insurance; registering a car at a new location, the driver's licence; budgeting; and more. Very highly recommended, a careful reading of Leaving Home will inevitable save on time, money and stress, as well as avoiding being blind-sided by the normal -- but as yet unexperienced -- demands of life on your own.
