Customer Reviews of Gothic 2 Gold

Gothic 2 Gold
Very good overall graphic, voices good, sometimes funny, sometimes sarcastic. PC Game should have a Readme file that gives maps, and walkthroughs

Just get Oblivion instead
Graphics aren't the most important part of a game to me. I already owned Oblivion when I bought Gothic 2 because I was hoping it would be a darker and more mature "Oblivion" style RPG. <
> <
> While it does have much more mature content than Oblivion,.. I never got to see it because of the bad controls,.. bad collision and lack of fun. (By bad collision I'm talking about your character walking through or getting stuck on objects.) <
> The only weapons you can find at first are a tree branch and a tiny dagger. There are no easy enemies to fight for a Level 1 character. Even the little gremlin looking guys in the first cave by that pond at the beginning totally beat the crap out of you with ease. The controls make combat an unfun chore. <
> <
> I'm a patient and forgiving gamer but Gothic 2 barely has half the quality of Elder Scrolls 4 : Oblivion. If you've never played Oblivion and don't have an XBox 360 or a PC that can run it,.. then maybe you'll get into Gothic 2. It has much lower system requirements.

Frustrating entertainment
First off, I have been playing CRPG's since the Original Bard's tale series, Kings Quest series, and Pool of radiance gold box series. I think the Baldur's gate series was great, especially the original. And enjoyed The Temple of elemental evil, despite it's many glitches. <
>So on that note... <
>Gothic 2 Gold edition is not a bad game, its an decent game that has some quest glitches and game design flaws that creates an unbalanced, frustrating experience. <
> <
>Amazon's spotlight reviews are used to sell items, and those reviews are terrible to go by. I totally disagree with "anyone" who says this is the best RPG ever. That's just ludicrous. <
>Even if it was the best they played...to what are they comparing it to??? <
> <
>The game has many good points. The graphics are very good, especially the scenery. The atmospheres are wonderful. The animations are decent enough, (this game was released around 2002) and the graphics are still good for today's standards. <
>The game ideas are good. Allowing you to make money, eat, collect things. It has a fair amount of varying creatures and characters to interact with. And loads of play time. <
>The developers allow your character to choose his own path, which creates alternate scenarios. Some of the dialog was quite humorous. Though some of the voice acting was terrible, but most of it was ok. A few repeat voice actors for different characters was obviously noticeable, and it made the game feel cheesy. <
> <
>For some reason, there is a large amount of Italian American accented voice acting, which doesn't go at all and removes you from the game world. Also some of the words used in the game are so completely modern it makes you want to smack the person involved in creating the dialog. <
>The mix of character names are strange. Fantasy names mixed with regular names. You'll meet characters with names like: Constantino, Sylvio, Palbo, Perdo, Pepe, Sarah, and Brian. And other characters with names like: Cavelor, Xardas, Vatras, Cord, and Wolfgar. Some mix well, some not at all. <
> <
>The game play is ok, but the controls are not! <
>If I didn't map the keys to my game pad, I would have returned the game. <
>Even still, I am not fond of the combat controls, but it's tolerable with a game pad. It would have been nice if the game was mapped automatically. <
> <
>The quest clues really suck, some are completely non existent. Leaving you to just roam around forever till you find the right person or thing you need to progress in a quest. In one quest, the game never tells you, nor gives you any clue that you need need to talk to a specific person to further one of the quests. A very frustrating experience. <
>Not all quests have glitches like this, but the few that do, make the game terrible to play. The time spent wandering around with no direction is ridiculous. <
> <
>Your character is so weak in the beginning of the game you can't even beat up a farmer. Common citizens kick your butt with complete ease. And not until you reach about level 6, which takes "Forever" (this is not far of an exaggeration) you'll begin to start enjoying some parts of the game. It takes you so long to gain levels and increase your fighting abilities you'll just want to fling the games CD's out a window. Your lucky if you can kill a fly. The funny part is, the best way to gain levels is to kill every creature in site. Unfortunately, to do that, you'll have to be playing for a long, long time to get your character to the point where he can actually defend himself against most threats. <
>If you think this is an exaggeration, just play it, you'll see. <
> <
>You get a lot of small quests to accomplish, however a lot of them you cant fulfill...till your character is... stronger!!! Which again...takes so long that you'll forget all about some of the quests you were given. <
>It's like teasing you. Here's a quest, but oh wait, here is another quest. But oh, you can't complete them til you do this quest. And oh yeah...you cant do that either until you learn to fight better..but, we wont let you do that until 30 game hours have passed because of how we designed the game to keep you a weak adventurer who has to run away from any form of confrontation. <
> <
>Quests are not given in good accomplishable order. And a lot of them are all about. talk to this person, ask that person, and give this to yet another person. While that's ok, there is just too much of it. <
>Again, the character progression was not done well. The things you need to learn to really enjoy this game are either so far away from you that by the time you get them your not interested anymore. Or you try to have your character learn multiple things at once which makes you unable to defend yourself for yet and even a longer period of time, which is too damn long already. <
> <
>But wait, there's more... <
>The responses and question choices given to your character to speak to others are mostly stupid. Some make you sound like your character is an idiot. The dialog is pretty bad, with a few interactions which are actually good. Most characters you meet in the game have attitude, and a superiority complex. Expect to get into a lot of pointless fights for the stupidest reasons. Or pay money to get out of them, just one too many of those situations in this game also. <
>The choices of dialog you are given to speak to someone seem to have been created just to make the character your talking to insult you. And it's done a so much you'll quickly begin to feel you wish you could write your own responses! You are hardly given any witty comments to say, and most of the dialog you have as choices are redundant. You'll just say them to make sure your not missing any important interaction to further your quests. You get a lot of sarcastic responses from the characters you find in the game. <
>But not all the characters are this way..there are a few characters that are actually nice, but don't expect them to say anything helpful. <
> <
>I really got bored and frustrated with this game. And the only thing that will make you continue playing is the mystery of the story line, which they accomplished very well. Or hoping you get to a point where your character can finally handle himself against even one significant bad guy. <
> <
>Unfortunately, the tediousness injected by the game design, the inability to really get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time, shoddy dialog, unbalanced quests and game play, and poor character progression make this game hard enjoy. <
> <
>It's not all bad, there are still parts of the game you will get into. I think this game could have been far better. But I will not say its the worst game. If you can get past the issues. You'll find Gothic 2 gold edition to be a pleasurable experience. <
>Hopefully Gothic 3 will have worked out a lot of these problems. <
>But for me, this game really missed me off. Luckily I bought it for $14 at a local shop. <
> <
>ADULT CONTENT WARNING <
>Be advised that this game contain some adult themes and content in which you can fully interact with. <
>Not for kids or young teens! I would strongly advise no one under the age of 21 play this game.
