distinguishing characteristics of great companies as opposed
to good companies. In addition, the book provides the important
distinguishing factors and lists recent research data to support
the claims made . Presentation of the research data alone makes
the book a solid value for the price paid.
The authors have taken numerous surveys and shaped a success model based upon the top performers across many industries.
They've named Abbott, Circuit City, Fannie Mae, Gillete and Nucor as top performers. The success models have many things in common. For instance, the employees value follow-through and a disciplined approach. People usually decide to stay or leave
quickly. The leaders develop a vision and adhere to it feverishly
or enthusiastically. The managers are passionate about the product or vision, they are best at delivering the product or service and personal drive is high. Change is managed skillfully.
This book is very helpful because the authors put together a model based upon successful companies and congruent behaviors that lead to successful outcomes. In addition, the authors deal with the question as to why some corporate strategies do not work. For instance, money alone is not always a cure-all for transitioning a company into the top-performer category. Lastly, the authors explain why successful companies get into the top performer status.

An Intirguing Look Into Success
In exploring the business world author Jim Collins researches hundreds of "good" companies and selects a handful of "great" companies. While most are successful, only a few rise above the rest. Among these successful companies are Circuit City, Walgreens and General Electric. To determine such success, the author searches for key practices that separate these certain businesses from the rest. In this search, the author explores the history of many companies in a series of intriguing stories, my favorite being the background on Kimberly Clark. The study focuses on how dedicated and strong willed employees make the difference. "Work smarter, not harder." Successful management techniques tend to arise from those of discipline and focus. Going back to the Kimberly Clark story, Darwin Smith was a newly appointed CEO in 1971. Although he did not feel qualified, he held the responsibility that came with the title and had the determination and strong will to learn and succeed, for over 20 years. With an interest in the business world myself, I found this book quite interesting and highly recommend it to others.
Study on Critical Factors for Organisational Greatness
Collins' curiosity and clear study brings to light some of those factors that contribute to greatness. These findings are grounded within individual, teachable 'points of view' which are easily applied to large organisations and applicable to small busness as well.
Collins puts his findings in clear accessable language. Including the finding that is responsible for the title... That good is the enemy of great.
I highly recommend this book/CD to leaders that are enaged with designing futures and those that work with them. It is core reading for key teams. It has made a significant difference in being able to articulate powerful conversations with teams about that which is tacit and critical to success. Giving common language and principles to engage with. A great study book for learning teams.
