Customer Reviews of Good Night, and Good Luck (Widescreen Edition)
Not Original but well done I give this a 2 not because the film wasn't a good one but because not too mucch initiative nor thought had to have gone into a recreation of historic fact. <
> <
>This was mostly a film of archive footage and having a actor sit in front a camera and copy the style of a journalist. <
> <
> <
>Not unique and I cant see it standing any tests of time.
a mixed bag
This film leaves me with mixed feelings. The acting is excellent, the pacing is superb, the cinematography is wonderful, the ambience of it crackles, the lead actor is particularly very effective.

<
>The film is also wonderful for its choice of subject matter and for the breathakting clarity with which its statement is articulated.

<
>That said, I can't help but feel that the content of the script was a bit thin. While we are told that people challenging McCarthy come under his guns, it doesn't seem to happen to Murrow beyond a file that raises some eyebrows. Murrow does not seem to be subjected to a vicious life and career destroying sort of campaign that other characters depicted in the movie do, such as the lady being grilled by the senate comittee. Was murrow not subjected to more than whats shown or was that about the extent of the attack on him? If its the latter, I am not sure there was enough material here for a movie. Murrow opposed McCarthy, McCarthy shot back, Murrow made his reply, sponsor got mad and the program was killed. Is that the extent of the story?

<
>If I seem to be trivializing Murrow's confrontation with McCarthy, perhaps its because history and documentaries have lead me to believe that opposing McCarthy brought living hell up on you (almost). This movie tells me that Murrow faced that risk but doesn't show me.
<

<
>In the end, I think this film is only partly about Murrow's confrontation with McCarthy or about McCarthyism. Its Clooney's personal statement about television, news, the news consuming public, and his way of drawing parallels between issues of that time and their continuing relevance today. Along with all that, its also a tribute to Ed Murrow.

<
>In all that, its a cogent, coherent piece of work. See it for that, see it because its a captivating piece of film, but as a history lesson, its thin. For that you'd do better watching a PBS or History Channel documentary on the subject.

<
>In a world where 99% of hollywood fare is bilge, this is a refreshingly wonderful piece of work. But as much as it is appreciated for that, it should also be remembered that its not weighty enough to merit comparison with the true film greats, such as say, Patton. The direction, action, camera work, etc are all as good as anything, but the script is thinner than the historically great films.

<
>But I am very glad it was made. It makes a statement that desperately needs to be made. It also makes me sad because I don't think anybody's listening who doesn't already have the same position as this film.
Not really much going on here
I think 2005 can go down as the year of the overrated important movies that just weren't very good. Syriana, Ushpizin and Brokeback Mountain all had their proponents in the "you must see this movie" game, but of them all, this was probably the most disappointing.

<
>It's not a bad movie. Showing footage of McCarthy with the actors was a good choice. The Edward R. Murrow actor is a great imitator. I like most of the acting and there's a certain elegance to the way people smoke. But this movie is about a battle that's been fought and won with only the Ann Coulters of the world acting like the winners were on the wrong side. It was a scary time, I suppose, but it's over.
<
>
<
>Watching these people go through the motions of fighting the battle is about as exciting as watching a baseball game where you already know the outcome and the plays (although I find baseball boring either way). It's television. Television took on Washington. Television won. And then everyone lost their jobs - or at least their positions.

>Sorry guys, this isn't terribly interesting. I can watch a documentary on this topic and get the same story. I'd probably like it more.
