Customer Reviews of Good Morning Story
Holger Czukay - 'Good Morning Story' (Tone Casualties) I probably like this disc as much as I do the former Can's bassist 'Moving Pictures' effort that I've covered before. In all honesty,'Good Morning Story' could've easily been a Can album,in a sense, that is.It has three other former Can members sampled on the CD as it stands. So,at least guitarist Michael Karoli, drummer Jaki Liebezeit and keyboardist Irman Schmidt are present by heart. All six tracks are quite innovating as well as diverse.Czukay has a guest vocalist on "Invisible Man" and "Dancing In Wild Circles" by a female who goes by the name of U-She...believe she's ALSO on the previously mentioned 'Moving Pictures' CD.The title track really impressed me as I also sat up and took notice of the well written "World Of The Universe".The final tune is a 22-minute epic "Mirage" that is best described as mutated drone making an all out attempt to take on a life form of it's own.Might also mention that it has a Middle Eastern vibe intact. It's been noted that Czukay stays up all night, every night, turning knobs, assembling tape splices as well as experimenting with sound. After hearing this piece of work, you'll see that his work has paid off.
6 stars
this is everything but a smart arse product. 6 stars are given because of the six tracks on the cd, each representing a whole cd on its own if you like. Starting with the INVISIBLE MAN: obviously inspired by the old tv serie of the invisible man featuring Abbot and Cosstello, latter one boxing against an invisible phantom. The music doesn't sound like a boxing soundtrack at all, it is seldom heard that music can have such a strong effect on one's mood using only a few amount of elements - and without losing Czukay's unique sense of humour. That piece alone is more worth than a thousand 74 minutes filled up cds with hey. To be continued by the title track GOOD MORNING STORY, a six o'clock in the morning rap which lets you come back from shopping and meeting a nun accompanied by some sinister sounding church...or were they wedding bells?...well, don't take this all too litterally. What doesn't make sense wordwise it does so when it comes to music. Nothing chaotic at all, a charming witty man is telling you a story which beats any early morning breakfeast tv program by far. DANCING IN WIDE CIRCLES leads you straight to Africa before the second world war and, believe it or not, straight back into our virtual world again which lets it appear so real for us. Hell of a Rhythm guaranteed! Are you ready for lift off? And further we go into the WORLDS OF THE UNIVERSE. This sounds like a Can rehearsel from 30 years ago appearing in a perfect reanimation like having a dead filmstar back again in virtual reality. Watch out if you find a competative guitar to this one here. ATLANTIS is track No.5 and the title lets you immediately become one of the inhabitants of this place. Is this electronic? Really? If so then this electronic takes you all at your hands leading you into a paradise you only can dream of. MIRAGE is the longest and final track on this album. Mirage means mirracle and this IS one. Alltogether: if you would consist of 6 different persons this music will satisfy you all with one blow. As the title says: 6 stars (for only one cd! )
Holger sounds great.
One of the finest Can related products I've heard in years. Certainly Holger's best new album since, what? Der Osten ist Rot? On the Way to the Peak of Normal? No, nothing will ever be that good but this space jitter-funk interplanentary psychedelic worldwide groove thang recalls many of the finer momentos on both of the aforementioned absolutely essential classic recordings. Six tracks, all excellent with guest shots by Can kin; Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebeziet, Michael Karoli and honorary band members Jah Wobble and U-She, this has good reason to sound as good and Can-like as it does.
