Customer Reviews of Gone with the Wind
Simply A Gem....Perhaps Even THE Gem!!!!! What can one say of GWTW that has not been said before? It IS the greatest film of all time, the best epic, the best example of supreme storytelling through film.
It has the rare gift that makes it in a league all its own...the Crown Jewel of the Hollywood legend.
The eternal romance of Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) is still capable of drawing the crowds, even though today's somewhat jaded fare is doing its fair share of brainwashing.
The supporting players are all fine too, they are all three-dimensional characterisations that all tell an individual story, like Belle Watling (Ona Munson), India Wilkes (Alicia Rhett), Aunt Pittypatt (Laura Hope Crews) and Prissy (Butterfly McQueen).
The secondary (and much more valid) romance of Melanie Hamilton (Olivia DeHavilland) and Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) is touching and splendid in its sentimentality and fine in its drama.
Mammy (Hattie McDaniel) is still wonderfully entertaining, especially in the scene the preceeds the Twelve Oaks party, where she is lacing Scarlett and they argue over 'that' dress.
The burning of Atlanta is still a sight to behold, with the flames rich in scarlet, orange and yellow hues.
The film is a perfect vision of Margaret Mitchell's lengthy tome of a civilisation no more....of a time GONE WITH THE WIND.
Good Movie - Bare DVD
I'm always sure I've seen this move enough, but I got caught up in it again this past weekend. Too bad it's gotten the reputation as a chick flick, because I think its pretty universal. The war is a background to the human story that rises above mere soap opera. Gable is perfect as Rhett Butler, Vivian Leigh was brilliant as Scarlett and Olivia DeHavilland never strikes a false note. Leslie Howard on the other hand seems miscast and I always hope that he'll be replaced before I view it again.
The Gone With the Wind DVD is somewhat of a disappointment. With a very good making of documentary already produced, I was very disappointed that it didn't make its way onto this DVD. I suppose once they sell the tar out of this one, we'll get a special collectors edition that we can buy all over again. Next time I hope we can have some commentary by film scholars. There is so much to tell us about this great film. There is a Deluxe Box set available, but it has nothing but play pretties. I long for substance.
Lesley Howard is brilliant and a strong character
In his role of Scarlett O'Hara's (initially) true secret love. I had been a fan of Mr. Howard's for many years. His performance here is among his finest. Also check him out in The Petrified Forrest. As for the rest of the film. When he's not in it it's a little strong on the romantic side.
