The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. There's also a seductive villainous with the suggestive name of Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), and the great actress Judi Dench makes her first appearance as Bond's superior, M, who wisecracks about 007's "dinosaur" status as a globetrotting sexist. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. --Jeff Shannon

Agent 007 Returns...
For nearly 40 years one man has consistently protected our basic freedoms all over the world. This one man has thwarted countless terrorist plots ranging from an attack on Fort Knox to commandeering of a space station, from countless minions of evil to femme fatatles. One man has withstood all and still come out on top with a sexy woman to love and a martini that is shaken, not stirred. This man is none other than MI-6's famous agent 007, James Bond. <
> <
>In "007: Goldeneye", James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is still living life in the fast lane as MI-6's most notorious secret agent. Constantly looking for love in all the wrong places, and torturing terrorists when the occasion arises, there always seems to be something for Agent 007 to do to stay busy. So when an incredibly powerful satellite codenamed `Goldeneye' is taken over by a former MI-6 agent (Sean Bean) and friend of James Bond. Now, it's up to Bond to determine how to stop this former agent and his femme fatale bodyguard (Famke Janssen) before `Goldeneye' is used for unspeakable acts of terror. <

>Director Martin Campbell ("The Mask of Zorro") breathes new life into the legacy of 007, with his energetic style of direction; he creates the perfect environment for the James Bond of the late-nineties. Pierce Brosnan taking over the role of James Bond from actor Timothy Dalton becomes the 5th actor to take on the coveted role of MI-6's bad boy secret agent. Brosnan turns in a fairly solid performance, although he did seem to be a little uncomfortable in the role, as it was his first big time leading role in a movie. His performance greatly improved in the next 4 Bond films that he starred in. Very talented actors and actresses portrayed the supporting roles that aided 007 in his quest to save the world, Robbie Coltrane and Judi Dench both deliver strong performances and continued to reprise their roles in all of the Pierce Brosnan sequels. The villains as portrayed mainly by Sean Bean as the evil version of 007, and his ultra-sexy femme fatale played by Famke Janssen, were very realistic and thoroughly engaging to watch. Throughout all of the James Bond films there has always been one constant, well make that two constants, one is the always present Aston Martin that 007 drives, and the other is the gadget master himself, Q. No matter what the impending disaster may throw his way, Agent 007 will always be prepared for battle. <
> <
>With 40 years of cinematic history under his belt, some would say that 007's days are numbered, but in my opinion if the world needs to be saved or a sexy woman needs a good man, James Bond will always be needed. "007: Goldeneye" is by no means the best James Bond movie ever made; however, it is still a very solid effort and in my humble opinion, better than any of the Bond movies Roger Moore starred in. If you're a fan of Agent 007, or merely wanting to see what all the fuss is about, "007: Goldeneye" is a perfect starting point, since everytime a new actor is cast as Bond, it's basically a rejuvenation for the character. Plus each movie is self-contained so there is really no overall story or order to follow. So basically jump on the James Bond bandwagon anytime you like. I promise, you cannot go wrong with this character. <

>"007: Goldeneye" is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and sexuality.

"I'd go to Russia occasionally...Just shoot in and out."
Pierce Brosnan proves he is the second-best James Bond ever in his first (1995) outing as 007 in GOLDENEYE. Besides being Brosnan's first Bond film, GOLDENEYE was also the first Bond film not to use an Ian Fleming title (though "Goldeneye" was the name of Fleming's Jamaica estate, so it goes not too far afield). GOLDENEYE also marks the first appearance of Dame Judi Dench as "M" (still a stern, no-nonsense boss) and Samantha Bond as Moneypenny. Desmond Llewelyn reprises "Q." Joe Don Baker and Robbie Coltrane round out the cast of good guys as a somewhat bumpkinesque CIA agent and a hearty Russian Mafia man. <
> <
>Sean Bean plays Janus, a former MI-6 agent gone turncoat whose master plan is to make himself fabulously wealthy by short-circuiting all of London's financial and property records using "Goldeneye," a hijacked Russian space weapon to do the job. His chief ally is Xenia Onatopp (the drop-dead gorgeous Famke Janssen) whose trademark assassination technique is to smother men between her legs. (Yes, you read that right.) <
> <
>Janus' plan begins to go awry when a technician, Natalia Semenova (the lovely Italian model/actress Izabella Scorupco) survives the Goldeneye hijack and manages to elude Janus' minions long enough to meet up with Bond. GOLDENEYE then becomes a series of hyperactive large-scale set-piece pyrotechnic battles during which the unflappable Bond has to do little more than shoot, quip, and straighten his tie. Luckily, Brosnan is up for it, playing Bond with an understated Conneryesque cool that never deserts him. Brosnan, an Irish-born actor who claims the first film he ever saw in the cinema was GOLDFINGER, was made for this role. It is a shame he missed being Bond sooner, courtesy of his contract on REMINGTON STEELE. <
> <
>The film slides into excess at times (the extended car chase between a Mercedes and a Russian tank is a bit too much), but the storyline is good enough to keep GOLDENEYE from degenerating into a cinematic migraine headache. Unfortunately, Eon Productions seems stuck on the idea that if a small-scale Hiroshima doesn't happen at least once every two minutes in a Bond film then the audience might fall asleep. <
> <
>Fortunately, they are the only ones in GOLDENEYE who are stuck. The dynamics between Bond and Janus as former friends are intriguing, the women are gorgeous, the comedy is well-paced, and the locations (the newly-minted capitalist Russia, and Cuba) are appropriately exotic. In short, this film saved the franchise. <
> <
>There is a real shortage of gadgets in GOLDENEYE. The Bond car (a BMW) is truly forgettable, primarily because the actual model wasn't ready for the film and a mock-up had to be used. However, the film does open with Bond driving the Aston-Martin DB-5, a direct visual link to the Connery films. Why he just didn't use it throughout is a mystery answerable by the words "contract" and "product placement." <
> <
>Brosnan, although he of course orders his martinis "shaken and not stirred" never gets to comment on the caviar or the wine list, a regrettable oversight. His casino time is likewise limited. The Bond franchise desperately needs to rediscover style, a key to uniqueness in our grubby era. (Is anybody listening?) However, Bond IS referred to as a "sexist, misogynist dinosaur" and "a relic of the Cold War" in this film, so there's still hope left in the world.

HIGHLY ENTERTAINING
Goldeneye is the perfect bond movie. It has just the perfect ingredients, suspence, violence, decieving villians, hot women, humor, and a very good plot. Unlike some unoriginal, thrown together, simple, stupid problems like in most bond movies, this one actually makes the viewer feel watching this is important. It makes you want to watch the rest of the movie. Also for the video game nerds out there. Goldeneye wasn't just a video game that apeared out of thin air, it was based on this movie. And if you love the highly acclaimed 1st person on the N64 YOU WILL DROOL OVER THIS! I will even go as far as saying this is one of my all time favorites. So grab a buttery bowl of popcorn and enjoy!
