Customer Reviews of Gods of Creation Death & Afterlife
Utterly Disapointing After hearing Coffin Texts preform several outstanding covers on numerous tribute albums I was extremely excited to find this album. But instead of the powerful riffs, crunching guitars, and strong production, I got 'Gods of Creation, Death, and Afterlife'. The major problem is the quality of the songwriting, both lyricaly and musicaly. Unlike the songs that they covered, the material on this album (with the exception of "Crypts of Eternity" and "Disturbing the Priest") were written by the band. I know that is a "No ...!" statement, but it just shows why the magic that they made with the covers was missing. But this also shows the talent of the musicians, I mean this contains some truly perfect vocals and some decent guitars. Aside from that, the keyboards seemd very out of place on the album. It seems that their mix of death metal and keyboards seemed somewhat forced and innaproriate. The two covers on the album are EXCELLENT! "Crypts of Eternity" (Slayer) is one of the finest covers ever. It is a truly great track. "Disturbing the Priest" (Black Sabbath) is another perfect example of a great cover song (though I would have loved to see their cover of Venom's "One Thousand Days in Sodom" on here). The only standout original track was "Revengeful Entity". It might not have been perfect, but it is still a great listen. The reason I could not bring myself to give this lower than three stars is because I can't hate a band with so much potencial. I really hope that in the future Coffin Texts will not waste this potencial and create some excellent death metal. But despite the rating, I cannot recomend this album,...
low-rate death metal
this death metal band is worse than cannibal corpse. the lyrics are cheesy, and the music is muddy.
Not a Nile rip-off, but not a very strong death metal debut
Coffin Texts' name, titles, and artwork led me to presume that they were merely a Nile clone. What I heard was far less brutal than Nile and often sounded like a subpar attempt to sound like _Covenant_-era Morbid Angel (without the guitar gymnastics). Dwell Records' 1st selling point for this release is: "This cd will conquer the death metal throne!" After several listens, it's obvious that Nile, Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Naglfar, Vader, or any other death metal rulers won't be dethroned by Coffin Texts anytime soon.
Now, for my dj's rating of the tracks: 1) Not very memorable. I listened to it 11 times in a row and nothing jumped-out at me (no rating) 2) slows down at points w/ nice double bass rhythm before getting fast (where guitars seem uncomfortable). (e) 3) minimal keyboard usage adds a little texture, but track suffers when they try to play too fast. (e) 4) cheesy keyboards (no rating) 5) strong intro. Horrible keyboard usage around 2:30. The mid-paced sections are good and the solos aren't as awful as on previous tracks. (E) 6) What does purgatory have to do w/ Egyptian mythology? I don't know, but Coffin Texts do. Around the 4:27 mark, the track really starts to come alive, then fades away. (E) 7) It's a bad sign when a band has to rely on a coversong for its trump card. This cover of Slayer's classic track off of _Hell Awaits_ does everything right compared to the rest of the cd. This production is far superior (this was probably on one of Dwell's Slayer tributes). The growls don't touch Araya's original vocal renditions of this track, but the music is played well (solos included). By far the best track on the cd. (EE) 8) The intro. sounds almost like they want to do some death nu metal. Then the rhythms sound like classic rock/metal. The most creative of their tracks, a fun song. (EE)
