The meat of the program is its drive restoration function, which creates periodic system safe points to which GoBack can revert a system. For example, if a recently installed program causes some sort of failure, GoBack can restore the system to its state prior to the program's installation. Or if the PC worked when the system was booted up but some unknown factor has hosed it, GoBack can revert the system to its startup state. GoBack can catalog several restore points, depending on the amount of available disk drive space it has. One feature even allows GoBack to revert a system to a particular safe point on a regular basis, which is ideal for PCs in controlled environments.
GoBack 3 caters to newbies and experienced users alike. The application is capable of automating everything for hands-off drive preservation, but is also completely configurable. The documentation, both online and physical, is thorough and friendly, as are the tutorials, so anyone willing to spend the necessary time will be able to take full advantage of GoBack's layered features.
The major flaw with GoBack is its propensity to churn the hard drive almost incessantly. It's especially noticeable right after the program is installed and after the user installs new software. This victimizes owners of older systems lacking DMA hard drives by bogging down almost everything, from simple Windows Explorer file management to application loading. Modern systems are more forgiving; however, writes (saving data to the hard drive) are noticeably bottlenecked.
GoBack 3 Deluxe isn't a replacement for regular backups of your important data files--it can't save your system in the case of a catastrophic hardware failure--but its wide range of system restore features can greatly cut down the time necessary for recovery from a virus, a failed program installation, driver corruption, or other common data problems. --Joel Durham, Jr.

Customer Reviews of GoBack 3 Deluxe
Peace of mind. I am very particular about my computer. However (at my wife`s insistance), I`ve installed some childrens programs/games for nieces and nephews (ages 3-10) and have a 13 year old niece who likes to surf the internet and leave me little surprises. (changed wallpaper, screensavers, messages, etc.)
Needless to say this can sometimes leave me with a jumbled up mess to fix. I`m also a download junkie and always trying new apps and utilities. Although I do periodic back ups it`s nice to be able to pinpoint exactly where I want my system to be restored to. If an install goes bad or new app messes things up it`s a very simple matter to back things up, even if Windows won`t start.
I run a DELL XPS with W98/SE Pentium 550mhz/288 megs RAM and have seen no system slowdown whatsoever. Expect to hear some more hardrive activitiy in particular if you have software that updates via the internet on a daily basis and affects a large number of files.
Cons, not too many. I would like to see a bit more configurability. Such as not having to protect an extended DOS partition on the C: drive. You have the option of setting passwords on the administrative and user level that will keep prying fingers of 13 year old nieces from deleting your GOBACK history and such.
Overall, I highly recommend this protection for anyone who has information on their PC they don`t want to lose.
Very good program
I don't have GoBack 3, but my extensive use came from an earlier version and the trial version of GoBack 3. Unfortunately my hard drive got fried in a thunder storm and that's something not even GoBack can fix. From what I know about this program is that it is one of the best programs out there. I usually download a lot of stuff, right now I even pushed my computer to 500MB free of 80GB. lol. With so many downloads comes the risk of many things going wrong. With this program installed, you need not worry.
Its much better than the System Restore feature for Windows ME and XP. You basically don't have to create a restore point becuse it creates many automatically. You can basically restore your computer to any time. My computer has crashed a couple of times. You know the usual, Windows can't start, freezing after installing bad programs, virus attacks. When all this happends, I just revert the computer to a time before and all is well. It makes me more bold at trying new software.
This program is very easy to use, so fear not. Right now I don't have the program, so I'm just looking to buy it now. BTW, this program starts before Windows starts and gives you a couple of seconds to start GoBack if you want.
Are there any cons? Yes there are. You must be carefull when reverting your computer. This isn't like the Windows Restore that I think just reverts basically configuration, this literally reverts everything. From installed programs to files. So if you revert it to a time before you started typing that 100 page paper, then that paper is gone. That's just to tell you how good this program is, and with great power comes great responsibility. lol.
The amount of memory it allocates to GoBack is dependent on the machine it is running on. This could mean using a lot of memory. I'm not sure but this definately uses a couple gigs on my machine since its an 80 gig. Here's the best thing. If you're not sure whether you want to buy it or not, try downloading the trial version from the roxio website. That's what I did, but that expired. I think its posible to register it after, but its better to have the cd hence I'm buying it.
DO NOT USE WITH WINDOWS XP
I have used GoBack on Win98 & ME OS in the past with no problems, but when I build three computers using WIN XP PRO, the only nightmare I had was when I installed GoBack, which came with Norton Systemworks. The computers would reboot once the install completed and then would fully lockup. At first I thought I made an install mistake, but after three times of reformating the hard drive and installing all my software (4 hours later each time), the same problem occurred, full lockup.
There is NO support from Symantec for their products unless you want to spend $30.00. You can email Symantec Tech Support after spending 20 minutes researching their site for Tech Support email site, but after 3 days, still no response back from Symantec. Save yourself ALOT of problems and DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT install GoBack on your system if you are running Win XP. Restoreit 3.0 seems to work better. Check most of the reviews, which give GoBack one star at best. After spending 12 hours reformating and installing software three (3) times, never again will I use GoBack!
