Customer Reviews of Globe & Mail - National Ed
Excellent paper, great for Canadian ex pats. After moving to the U.S. from Canada, one of the things that I have missed most keenly is Canadian media. I have been a Globe and Mail reader for most of my life, so naturally it's one of the items that I miss most.
For those that don't know of it, the Globe and Mail is Canada's oldest national newspaper. Ideologically speaking, I would peg it as centrist, but I find that interpretation of this varies greatly depending on where you are on the political spectrum yourself. The reporting, while remaining interesting, tends to be thoughtful rather than sensational. I hesitate to itemize a list of favourite columnists, I'll stop at saying that they have a talented newsroom with a number of interesting personalities.
The only name that I will mention in this connection is Michael Kesterton, whose long running column social studies - a daily miscellany of information, found at the back of the front section on weekdays, never fails to grab my interest. For instance today it covers International Orangutan Awareness Week, the memory power of toddlers and sea lions, and house cleaning strategies.
In terms of news coverage, the Globe follows Canadian domestic news extremely well, and does a good job of reporting on international news. I would recommend this subscription for anyone wishing to keep up with daily events in Canada while living outside of it.
