Thus, director and cowriter Joe Nussbaum deftly and affectionately parodies Shakespeare in Love while skewering the ubiquitous Star Wars mythos in only eight minutes. This droll confection gets all the details right, from its late-'60s countercultural backdrop to a score that nimbly weaves bursts of John Williams-like symphonic bombast with tremulous, neo-Elizabethan chamber motifs. Crisply shot and edited, the film even employs the lateral wipes and keyhole dissolves Lucas resurrected from '30s serials for his epochal space opera. For Star Wars buffs and film fans in general, George Lucas in Love proves a delight. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews of George Lucas in Love
Not just another agricultural space tragedy... In ten minutes, how many allusions to Star Wars and George Lucas lore can you make? Well, if you're the director of "George Lucas In Love," (aka GLIL) dozens. With a wonderful sense of comedic timing and a finely honed script, GLIL manages to keep its viewers engaged... and looking forward to seeing the next reference to Star Wars. And for non-Star Wars fans, there's even a version of the film on the DVD explaining the jokes and references, a la "Pop Up Video."
There are some other short films on the DVD too, but they're not as good as GLIL.
Lucas with Writers Block.
Got 9 minutes to spare on an excellent short parody film? Then check out Joe Nussbaum's GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE. The story follows a young Lucas in his days at USC and the creation of his Star Wars Universe. Like SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, George needs to find his muse to get his ideas on paper. Along the way we see other influences that would make it into the galaxy far, far away.
This short film made a big impression on many in Hollywood and it even earned its own mythos. Many Hollywood big-wigs, including Steven Spielberg and Lucas himself exchanged the film as required viewing. And it is easy to see why. The film looks like a big budget film with Martin Hynes portraying George. His physical similarities alone are uncanny. The young Lisa Jakub who played the oldest daughter in MRS DOUBTFIRE plays his muse, with Princess Leia buns firmly attached to her head. Even with the great performances, clever screenplay and cool musical score, everything is extremely balanced with nothing overshadowing anything else, making this one of the best short films in ages.
The DVD version is pretty loaded for a nine-minute feature. It includes a commentary track, a making of doc with several interviews, and an interactive version of the film, drawing attention to the many Star Wars references when they occur. There is also a special feature hidden behind the secret code "1138". Also included with this disc are three other shorts. All the films are in a widescreen format.
SWING BLADE is a trailer length short mixing SLING BLADE and the hip movie SWINGERS. The result is very rewarding although you are glad that it doesn't go on too long. At 4 minutes, it works fine.
FILM CLUB is a parody of FIGHT CLUB and will only be of interest to fans of that film as its charm is in its re-creation. The total running time comes in at around 4 minutes and includes some impressive special effects.
Finally we have EVIL HILL, which places Austin Power's nemesis Doctor Evil in the world created for NOTTING HILL. At 9 minutes, this is easily the weakest link on the DVD. The actor playing EVIL does an excellent impression but the story doesn't allow you to care. Besides, how can you parody a parody? The original source (AUSTIN POWERS) is a comedy while this short tries to force laughs where they are not deserved.
This should be proton-torpedoed out of existence.
Let me first say that I certainly wouldn't buy it. I'm not a die-hard star wars fan, I'm more of the "big-fan-but-wouldn't-dress-up-as-a-SW-character" type.
Secondly, I wouldn't actually call this a movie. It's more of a string of scenes, each containing one or more rather lame Star Wars "innuendos". After it finished (all nine minutes of it), it left me asking : "So the point of that was what, exactly ?".
The sheer cheesiness of it all is extremely off-putting and kills any entertainment value it might otherwise have had quicker than a lightsaber through the heart. Forget the cheesiness of "Scary Movie"- that was forgivable because it was genuinely funny; this isn't even slightly so.
There is just one thing I can say about this collection to it's credit : It avoided the "I am your father", "Nooooo !" cliche (but only just). I swear, if I hear that one once more I'm going to go and bay at the moon.
