Customer Reviews of George Burns: 100 Years of Comedy
Old, stale "dingbat woman" comedy While I was watching these tapes, Carroll O’Connor, the actor who played Archie Bunker in All In The Family died. Thinking back, it also reminded me of Jean Stapleton, who played Edith, his not so bright wife, whose on-stage personality was much like that of Gracie Allen. Certainly the times have changed, but when watching these tapes I did not find the scenes with Gracie to be funny. The comedy based on the “dingbat woman” was stale and uninteresting. However, the monologues where George speaks to the audience are classics in timing, delivery and stage presence. You could use them as training material for aspiring stand-up comics.
The scenes in these tapes are all from the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, which aired in the 50’s. Granted, the times were different then, but I was reminded of the Amos & Andy shows where the humor was based on stereotypes and people acting as ignoramuses. Funny at the time, in many ways it is now embarrassing to watch them.
I am a great fan of George Burns, whose comedy never grew old and tired as he approached the century mark. However, these tapes of an old show are old humor whose time has gratefully long past. Which also is a commendation of our society, where women can now be funny without being stupid.
