Customer Reviews of Gavin Bryars: The Last Days
Music for Philosophical Minds The first time I heard Bryars' music was on this album. I was not impressed. I think it was about half-way through the first quartet that I turned the record off in disgust. The work seemed crude and amateurish compared to other minimalist composers that I enjoy (Glass, Reich, Adams). I considered Bryars to be but a poor imitation of Glass. Nine months later, after acquiring a greater appreciation for contemporary chamber music, I revisited this album, and found it to be one of the more provocative albums of contemporary chamber music I have heard in a long time. Thoughtful might be a better work. It is really music that engages the mind and seems to actually stimulate the thought processes. A subdued lyricism seems present on every track. Balinescu lends his own charismatic charm to this music as well. I now consider Bryars to be more than the equal of Glass. But to even compare him to another artist is a disservice to his own unique gifts. This is excellent music to accompany any thought-process: writing, thinking, dreaming, or meditating.
Amazing
Bryars never seizes to amaze me: everything he thouches seems to turn into gold. Although this doesn't strike me as his 'best' work, it still contains ample beauty to shut me up, and force me to listen. The melodic lines evolve quite fast compared to "After The Requiem", "Jesus' Blood" or "Cadman Requiem"; although the album contains 72 minutes of violin-music, it's never boring.
