Argentine tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri took the saxophone style of John Coltrane and adapted it to South American tango and folk idioms. His trademark piercing tenor cries ring through on this 1999 live date from New York City's Latin Quarter club. Clad in dark sunglasses and a black Bolivar hat, Barbieri leads his combo in a nice set consisting of new tunes like the Satie-like "Mystica" and "Llamerito y Tango"(also featured in the 2000 documentary Calle 54) and his classic cuts "Last Tango in Paris" "Europa," and the danceable "Viva Emiliano Zapata." This pleasing concert reveals that Gato Barbieri's stage persona is as earthy and ethereal as his unique Afro-Andean moves and grooves. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews of Gato Barbieri - Live from the Latin Quarter
If you are a fan, its a 5 star rating. If you are a fan of Gato Barbieri, this DVD would warrant a 5 star rating. While I am not a fan, I do like many of his compositions. However, on every CD I've ever purchased by Gato, I find myself really liking maybe only 2 or 3 compositions. Gato is a great sax player; he just wears me out sometimes. So did Grover for that matter. But, for what its worth, this DVD has reference quality audio and video. The box labels the audio as mono, but it actually contains Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1 and DTS 5.1. If you like Gato, you'll love this one. Even if you are not a fan, I'd have to recommend this one for its audio and video quality alone. Also, its widescreen which is rare for DVD music videos.
