At first look, you might think the SP is a sleek travel alarm clock. When closed, it's just as tall and deep as the original GBA, but only half as wide. Due to its clamshell design, the screen is always protected from everyday scratches. A small button in the center of the console turns on the backlighting element for use in low-light situations, like in a moving car.
The SP comes with a well-designed power adapter that recharges a built-in battery; its prongs fold in for easier storage. Our informal tests found that it takes about four hours to fully charge (you can even play it while it's plugged in and charging), and the battery lasts about 11 hours with the backlighting constantly on--your results may vary. Using the backlighting less often will conserve battery power.

| With separately sold cables, you can connect the Game Boy Advance SP to other GBAs for multiplayer gaming (above) or to the Nintendo GameCube |

But size, power, and affordability do not come without trade offs. There's no headphone jack here, though Nintendo promises an adapter. The system isn't very loud at its highest volume, and the sound can be turned down to socially acceptable levels. The L and R shoulder buttons are a fraction of the size they were on the GBA, and thus are harder to hit. Also, the reduced size of the SP is slightly less comfortable for adult hands than the GBA, but perhaps more comfortable for smaller hands. The cartridge port placement on the lower part of the console is fine for GBA games, since they are flush with the console body, but older Game Boy Color carts will stick out in a way that takes some getting used to.
Open it up and the hinge will seek out a preferred, pre-set angle (about 150 degrees), though you can open it a bit wider or narrower for your own comfort. The hinge stands up well to lateral pressure, and over all, the SP seems just as rugged as its predecessor--which has proven to be very rugged, indeed. --Porter B. Hall

Customer Reviews of Game Boy Advance SP - Cobalt
Light-weight wonder [Note: Functionally there's no difference between the Platinum and Cobalt (blue) versions.]
The new GBA SP is incredibly light in weight, and it lights up the 2.8-inch LCD screen with a built-in sidelight (a.k.a. frontlight). I wish Nintendo had included backlight for lighting that's more even and bright, but at least this time they got it right; the original Game Boys were just awful eye-killers. Finally I can get to play Castlevania and enjoy the graphics, too.
Many people complain about the reduced L and R buttons. They are indeed more awkward than on the original GBA, but unless you have real large hands, there shouldn't be a problem getting used to the new layout. Long-term, though, one wonders what negative effect it has on the human hands; already, our thumbs and other digits are over-exerted from punching on cell phones, console controllers, holding mice and trackballs, and now tapping furiously on small buttons on the GBA SP. Do your body a favor and take lots of breaks. Rub your fingers gently. You'll thank this preacher later!
SP = ahhhh finally!
Well I ran off to a local store and bought one today (3/23), and all I can say is "Go get one, right now!".
The Good:
*Screen = lighted, bright with a on/off button
*Buttons = feel "solid", no more mushy buttons
*Folding design = Excellant!, reduces scratches to screen
*Battery = have yet to drain it, can also play while plugged in via AC adapter which the booklet says will reduce recharge time
*AC Adapter = Prongs fold in making it easy to carry with you, its also very small and lightweight compared to your typical AC adapter.
*Overall = this new design feels lighter, fits in a shirt pocket, and for a guy in his "30s" people are gonna think I'm using a PDA heh!
The Bad:
*No headphone plug - never use'em anyways
*The Left/Right buttons on corners are a bit awkward and somewhat mushy/loose, makes you put your wrists closer together. I think I just need to get used to it.
*Not sure how bad this is but...The owners manuals states that the rechargeable batteries can be recharged 500 times Approx.
and charge performance may decrease depending how often and how long it gets recharged (typical stuff - make sure you read it though).
The End:
I gathered up all my old GBA "gear": Worm lights, Light/magnifier, Rechargeable battery kit, Regular AA batteries, AC Adapter kit, Cases and put them in a bag. Bye bye to them all - they are now enroute to my nephew ;)
