Customer Reviews of GS+ GeoStatistics for the Environmental Sciences
Nice program -- sheds light on complex subject Nice program, does a very credible job of making this complex type of statistics manageable. Easy to use even for the stats-challenged among us. Interface especially easy for testing different analysis settings and for learning by example. Highly recommended.
Great program if you're serious about geostats
If you're new to serious geostatistics this is the probably the program for you - I've been using GS+ for several years and have been a big fan since first learning about 5 or 6 years ago. For a long time geostatistics has been mainly the domain of mining and other natural resource engineers, largely (I'm convinced) because to use these powerful tools you had to be either a math whiz or a computer whiz or both, and only mining engineers had the background and motivation($$). Geostatistics has proved its worth in oil and mineral exploration, and is now slowly making its way into mainstream statistics, but it's still difficult to find good geostatistics software that is easy to use. Most comes as code that must be compiled with a programming language like fortran or S+, without much of a user interface or even integrated graphics, some comes as huge engineering packages costing tens of thousands of dollars. Geostatistics has now started to appear in dedicated mapping and GIS programs and is getting better, but is still either too simple (might as well be nearest neighbor) or is very specific to a particular GIS and not so good for the general user. What's nice about Gs+ is that it seems to be written for the serious user who wants to be up and running and understanding geostats quickly, without having to compile programming code or be using a sophisticated GIS package. It's not cheap (I wish they'd come out with a student version) but if you value your time you can write it off to time and frustration savings. If you're a geostatistician you won't want this package - you're probably writing your own code anyway - but if you're a regular environmental scientist or engineer or student I don't think you'll be disappointed. And version 7 adds some nice features like conditional simulation and h-scattergrams that I don't think are available in even the GIS add-ons.
