Customer Reviews of G3 - Live in Denver
Stick with the OLD G3. Eric Johnson fits better! I have to say first off that I'm a huge fan of Satriani, and I love Vai's technical capabilities. As for Yngwie, well, he's FAST and he knows his scales, but he has no heart and just likes to make lots of noise.
That's basically what I felt like I was listening to during the entire DVD. Noise. First off, the sound quality is pure crappola. I don't know what Satch is doing with his 'new setup', but I guess he was using his pre-finalized JSX amp, and I wasn't impressed at all. The sound came off as brittle and wayyy too high in the treble range. As for his song choices, well, I like them, but he should have done something I haven't heard that often live before, such as BELLY DANCER or anything OTHER than SATCH BOOGIE and MYSTICAL POTATO HEAD. It doesn't help that I didn't like the mix.
Steve Vai did his thing, which was to make funny, arrogant poses while he shows off the cool noises he can make with his guitar, and proves that he can use a lot of gear competently. It's a virtuoso performance, but I wouldn't expect less from Vai. I liked the Live in Astoria DVD more, and I'm glad he played JUICE, but I get tired of his onstage show-offy gimmick quick. And his funny facial expressions. Get over it, dude! You're an awesome player, but your ego is even more awesome than your abilities!
Yngwie Malmsteen; I'm not a fan, and he really doesn't fit in that well with Satch and Vai. It's just his constant sweep picking and thrashing. Completely out of place and neo-classical to the point of absolute redundancy. Just get off the stage already, man!!
In the old G3 concert, Eric Johnson helped mellow the other two out, but when they are doing their G3 Finale on THIS show, it seemed as if Vai was trying to upstage Malmsteen with speed and plain annoying NOISE while Satch wanted to try and keep up with the frenzy; although Satch still sounded like Satch, it sounded to me like Satch trying to be more than what he is so he can 'fit in' with his duo. I like the Satch that finds a groove and goes with it, not the one that plays in high treble, high speed and low quality for those fast notes. Leave that to Malmsteen, duder!
I say stick with the old G3 concert. It had a lot more to offer than this racket. Plus, LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO and LIVE AT THE ASTORIA show Satch and Vai in their better modes, and in a more organized manner.
It was hardly worth the ten dollars for purchase. Eeek!
One of the best sounding DVD's I've heard.
I wish they would have done the G3 with Petrucci, but oh well, Yngwie is cool. Vai and Satch are awesome on this DVD. Vai played 2 songs that I had never heard before. They were awesome. It is cool to see the mighty Billy Sheehan rip up the bass. Joe is plain cool! He has chops, but he focuses on feeling so much more. Yngwie is cool, but he plays the same damn licks all the time. This DVD shows his lack of melody and feeling, which is something that he has always lacked in my opinion. Despite that, he was still entertaining to watch. The best thing about this DVD is the sound quality. Epic really does an awesome job on the sound production. I give the sound 100 stars. If you want to see guitar masters at their best, buy this DVD. If they really wanted some cool interplay between the G3 guitarists, they should get Greg Howe. He is unbelievably talented!
If you believe, you will be satisfied
I saw this show when it came to Oregon, but they held it in this concrete building which has terrible sound (I heard they had been having sound problems in general on this tour); so I was eager to see how it sounded on DVD. I think there's some problems in the balance between all the different guitars, especially during Vai's set, you can barely hear Tony McAlpine (...)! I notice a lot of people criticizing Satriani; saying that he shamefully reproduces his recordings note for note live and that he sounds the weakest in the jam. Satch is a master composer; he does a little improv in his legato lines and such, his music is tightly arranged though. If he didn't play it for the most part like it is on a record then it would fall apart, thus it's stupid to hold this against him. I think Satch has the broadest style of all of them; he's the blues guy with metal technique, Ynwie's style is dominated by classical influence combined with a technique known as "tendonitis", and I don't know what Vai is. Vai's stuff is too...out there, it's composed fastidiously but it sounds like a jam, and his squealing often annoys me. Ynwie is an astounding musician, listen to any of his solos during the jam; all of the right notes are there, but he has a habit of obscuring the musical quality of his playing with masterbatory technique. His acoustic guitar solo is great, and his set will certainly glut your appetite for sonic sensory assualt, though ultimately his stage antics and ADHD playing especially during the jam leave me trying to picture him in a clown costume. I miss the Satch set from the first G3 video; The Extremist aside, this one just makes me want more. They could have chosen a better mix of songs for one thing, I can't believe Always with me Always with you still hasn't made it on to a G3 video. I don't know Vai's career too well so I can't say much about his set, I think it's pretty lame, but that's me. A good video overall, worth it if you like any one of these players. The poor set selection keeps it a star short of five.
