Customer Reviews of Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie - The Conqueror of Shamballa
Well done, but it would have done better as an entire season First off, as you probably know, this movie is a sequel to the Fullmetal Alchemist series, and as such, you need to have seen the series prior to the movie if you want to understand and appreciate the film. Unless you've seen the entire series (particularly the ending), you're not likely to really understand what's going on. That said, on with the review. <

>The animation in this film is extremely well done - somewhat higher than the series. This unfortunately means that the tone of the movie is more serious than the series. There are certainly some jokes and the like, but most of the movie is quite serious. <

>The dubbing is as great as ever (I can't say how good the Japanese voices were since I watched it in English). Even the new folks were well done. I really think that the dubbing for Fullmetal Alchemist is among the best in the business. <

>All the main characters are back, but due to the short length of the film, we only see some of them briefly. The movie focuses primarily on Ed and Al - particularly Ed. <

>The plot is good, but I really think that it could have used more time. The movie moves along fairly quickly, putting all of the pieces in place for the conclusion, but not going into great detail. What they did was well executed, but somewhat rushed and thus shallow. They could have easily produced an entire season of the show based on the plot in this movie, but instead we get this short movie. <

>I would have definitely given this movie 4 stars - maybe 4 1/2 (it's too short to get 5), but I REALLY don't like the ending. I found it to be highly disappointing. I won't spoil it, but I'd expect a lot of FMA fans to be disappointed by it. It arguably wraps everything up, but leaves enough open that they could make more FMA if they wanted to. Unfortunately, from what I hear, there are no plans to make more Fullmetal Alchemist. <

>All in all, this film is definitely worth watching for any FMA fan. However, I think that the ending really leaves something to be desired. Personaly, it's the first time in quite a while that I've actually been angry after seeing the end of a movie
So much potential wasted
I am a huge fan of the Anime Fullmetal Alchemist and bought all of the DVDS in the series. I was thrilled to hear that there was going to be a full-length movie coming to DVD. I waited and bought the "Limited Edition" version but in truth, I wish that I had just purchased the regular release over a month ago. Ed and Al are separated at the end of the series and Al is determined to get his brother Edward Elric back from beyond the gate in a world that is much like ours in a pre-WWII Germany. There is no alchemy in this world so Edward puts his skills to other uses helping a friend who sort of looks like his brother and shares Alphonse's name. But the movie just fell flat. Yes it has its moments but so few of them it saddens me to think that one of my favourite shows was gutted of everything that made it special or tacked on in a superficial way with few exceptions. It had so much to work with and instead, they went for big battle scenes, pointless diversions and an ending that will leave you feeling slightly more than mildly apathetic. The drama, the humour and the action of the series just isn't to be found here. Also, so many parts of it just don't make any sense at all. If you MUST complete your collection, buy the regular edition because the limited edition isn't worth the extra ten dollars. So much potential gone to waste. I really want to give this only two stars but at least Edward and Alphonse Elric are united once again and one has to chuckle at the end when the Elric brothers hitch a ride with a couple familiar faces but I won't ruin it for you. That's something, right?
Awesome end to a great series!
If you're any kind of fan of the series, you'll love this finale. While we're sad to see it go, at least they didn't leave it off with the series finale.
