Customer Reviews of Fugitive Vol.3:Search in a Windy City
Two Superior Eps.: "Search In A Windy City" & "Wife Killer" This VHS video has two episodes of the 1963-1967 TV drama series, "The Fugitive", starring David Janssen as the wrongly-convicted doctor from Indiana, "Richard Kimble". <
> <
>Episodes included: "Search In A Windy City" and "Wife Killer". Both programs feature appearances by the infamous "one-armed man". <
> <
>"Search In A Windy City" is a "Fugitive" entry from the debut season of the series. It aired on prime-time network TV on February 4, 1964, and was written by Stuart Jerome and directed by Jerry Hopper. It was the 19th episode in the series. <
> <
>This excellent "Fuge" installment has Dr. Kimble hot on the trail of the "one-armed man" (the person Kimble thinks is responsible for murdering his wife, Helen). Kimble gets a tip that his prey is in Chicago, and elicits the aid of a local newspaper reporter to assist in his chase. <
> <
>It isn't long before Kimble's pursuer, Phil Gerard, joins in the big-city hunt, trying to re-capture the convicted doctor. This "double search" plotline makes this a very intriguing and exciting episode. <
> <
>The "Guest Cast" includes: Pat Hingle, Nan Martin, Addison Richards, Barry Morse, and Bill Raisch. <
> <
>Morse plays Indiana Police Lieutenant Philip Gerard, whose pursuit of his elusive prisoner reaches relentless proportions throughout the series. Interestingly, though, Morse appeared in less than one-third of the "Fugitive" episodes. <
> <
>Raisch appears as the hard-boiled "one-armed man", whom Kimble saw fleeing the scene of his wife's murder several years earlier. "Windy City" is the first episode which has Kimble actually catching a glimpse of the one-armed man, thereby verifying for the viewing audience in this nineteenth show that the one-armed man is real, and not just someone in Kimble's mind. <
> <
>"Windy City" is a rare episode in several ways. It's one of just 10 episodes co-starring Raisch as the single-armed object of Kimble's four-year chase. Raisch always appeared in the title (flashback) sequence of each episode (as did Morse as Gerard), but the one-armed man was only featured in the main story of ten different programs. <
> <
>The "Windy" script is also unique for prominently focusing on BOTH the 1-armed man and Lt. Gerard in the same episode ("Wife Killer", the 2nd episode on this tape, is another). Some good "chase" scenes are on tap in both of the programs on this video, with Kimble going after the one-armed man and Gerard hot on the heels of his man (Kimble). <

>Main "Windy City" guest star Pat Hingle has a list of movie and TV credits about a mile long. The Denver-born character actor has made more than 100 movie appearances and nearly one hundred guest shots on television programs, dating back to 1954. Hingle's very first film role was in 1954's classic "On The Waterfront", as an uncredited bartender. Pat has put in TV guest-starring appearances on a huge variety of series, including (but certainly not limited to): "The Rookies", "McCloud", "Barnaby Jones", "M*A*S*H", "Hec Ramsey", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Medical Center", "Route 66", "The Phil Silvers Show", "Rawhide", "St. Elsewhere", "Matlock", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Cheers", "The Twilight Zone", "Bonanza", and -- of course -- "The Fugitive". ... Pat popped up in just about everything it seemed. And he was never better than in his "Fugitive" appearance, as Chicago newspaper columnist "Mike Decker". <
> <
>"Wife Killer" is a 3rd-season ep. (aired January 11, 1966). Written by Dan Ullman. Directed by Richard Donner. ... Again, Kimble chases the 1-armed man, while Lt. Gerard tries to nab Kimble. This is another of those rare episodes with both Raisch and Morse, and while not quite as compelling (IMO) as "Windy City", this 77th show in the series has its share of fine moments as well. Kimble actually saves the life of the one-armed man in "Wife Killer", after he's seriously injured in a car crash while being chased by Dr. Kimble. Naturally, though, Kimble's patient slips free by episode's end. <
> <
>In addition to Morse and Raisch, "Wife Killer" co-stars Kevin McCarthy and Janice Rule. <

>A final blurb .......... <

>"Search In A Windy City" is an edge-of-your-seat program, that ranks in my personal "Top 10" favorites among "Fugitive" episodes. "Wife Killer" doesn't rank quite as high on my Fuge meter, but it's a darn good one too.
