Customer Reviews of From the Manger to the Cross
The Usual Hollywood Story The one positive thing about this movie is it does use the King James Version Bible. One of the most disturbing things it does not show the Resurrection (without this, what hope does mankind have?). John the Baptist is shown in only two scences. The Baptism of Jesus is omitted (which Hollywood usually does not depict correctly in the first palce, i.e. full immersion). The order of miracles are not correct. Even at the turn of the century Hollywood had set the pace for it's on going deception.
The story of Jesus filmed in the Holy Land in 1912
The Kalem Company reenacted their Passion Play for the camera in this 1912 film directed by Sidney Olcott. "From the Manger to the Cross" was the very first Biblical epic to be filmed in the Holy Land. The story is a straighforward depiction of the life of Christ, from the Nativity to the Crucifixion. There is even footage of the Holy Family at the Sphinx. The film has been tinted to match the release prints and has a reverent sort of dignity that makes it seem much less stagey than the dramas of the day. Robert Henderson-Bland plays Jesus as a man while Percy Dyer plays the boy. This silent classic, also known as "Jesus of Nazareth," was named to the National Film Registry in 1998.
