Barbara Crampton looks great in leather! Great horror movie! Jeffrey Combs does very well in this one
Perfect Companion Piece To RE-ANIMATOR!
As most horror film fans know, Re-Animator is simply "The Greatest Cult-Classic Horror Film Ever Made!" So, of course, the makers of that film couldn't just leave it at that. Of course, they made a sequel a little bit later, but FROM BEYOND remains the ultimate companion piece to Re-Animator!
Once again, most of the same cast is used. Stuart Gordon is the director and Brian Yuzna is the producer. Richard Band gives the film his usual twist of eeriness with his haunting score. Most of the special effects guys are still here, and some of the writers are here as well! And, once again, it's based on a terrifying H.P. Lovecraft story (of the same name). And, once again, it's one of the greatest films ever made.
Of course, nobody can expect a film like this to match the visceral power of Re-Animator. But surprisinly, FROM BEYOND reaches a close second on my list of greatest films ever made. It's simply the greatest B-Film ever made (I'd like to think of Re-Animator as being an A-Film, but that's just me). The acting is superb (with Jeffrey Combs giving another magnificent performance), and the special effects are surprisingly icky and disgusting (I don't think I've ever seen that much Goo in a horror film before). The story is complex as well, and there are plenty of subplots going on in the film.
The basic plot involves "The Resonator"... an invention that stimulates the dormant pineal gland in the brain. By utilizing this gland, anyone within the range of "The Resonator" can see into a "4th Dimension" so to speak. The film starts off in high gear, with it's inventor, Dr. Pretorius, getting attacked by a flying creature and Crawford Tillinghast, his assistant, being locked away in a mental institution.
Of course, this is where Barbra Crampton (a psychologist) and Jeffrey Combs (Tillinghast) exchange in what has to be the greatest lines of dialogue ever to grace the screen. Upon being asked by Crampton what happened to Dr. Pretorius, Combs answers...
"It Bit His Head Off.... Like A Ginger Bread Man!"
And you know what? That's only five minutes into the movie! I don't want to spoil the rest, so if you want to see one of the greatest films ever made... rent this depraved shocker today. Of course... this film is an essential for fans of Re-Animator and H.P. Lovecraft.
(Lovecraft's original story is great as well and is highly recommended)
