Customer Reviews of Friend
"Errrrrr... WOW!" This is one amazing film. This film has to be one of my favourites of the last few years, or more. I rented it... watched it twice then bought it.
The last half hour of the film left me with my jaw unhinged. Wow I thought... this film can be watched just for one of the most moving sequences in recent cinema. And every time I watch it, the last few scenes actually move me even more than the first time through. Can't say that for many other films.
But the ending isn't what makes this a great movie. For me it's the great friendship that is so powerful and up front, and actually draws the viewer into their little group that makes the film. Although the first half hour is slow, it all builds up to a point where you can see that these guys are the greatest of friends.
And it just gets better... and better and better.
Just simply an wonderful film. And I'm now hooked on Asian cinema.
a very cool korean movie
after watching too many lousy korean soap operas on the tube, with so many all-look-alike plastic surgeries korean faces on the tube, i could never imagine that this korean movie could be this good. that thin faced young actor is very very talented. teachers in the early days in asian countries almost all of them had beatened up their students like what we have seen in this movie, just like what i have personally experienced in my early school years. I've been slapped, kicked, whipped with rattan stick or whacked with hard wood plank by numerous teachers in different schools. lot of wounds, bruises and bleedings. i have been picked out by one of the schools' administrators in front of the whole school teachers and students, slapped on the face so many times and kicked on the butt so viciously in public and stood alone in the sun for so many hours afterwards, but what can i say? my father is not a gangster. nowadays, you could even lose your son or daughter by simply scold them too much and too loud, your neighbor might snitch on you and call 911, you'd be in jail for a long long time. the student's parents definitely would sue you and asked millions for punitive compensation. those schools harboured such teachers might also face endless law suits....the social workers might regularly knock on you door to check on your parental behavior afterwards. who could and dare to do such vicious beatings anymore? this is a very watchable movie. if you missed it, you just missed a lot of fun and joyful memories like mine. kids chasing ddt sprayer vehicle might all have died long time ago from lung cancers. i did it too, but survived so far only with respiratory wheezing problem. this movie explained why the korean 'old boys' would and could have been recognized as one of the best movies and honored in canne movie festival 2004.
Depth
This is a film with surprising degrees of depth and profundity. Unfortunately, the subtitle translations in English is pitiful (they make even simple grammatical mistakes in some places), so those who are not Korean will miss out on a lot of subtleties relevant to the Korean language until a better translation comes out; however, this is not a serious problem, the film can still be enjoyed. There is too much depth in this film to grasp all of them (imagery, foreshadow, symbolism, irony, etc.) the first time through. A friend told me that a great book or film has profound depth, which is to say, reading or watching it through the second, or third, or fourth time will disclose to the reader or viewer a whole new appreciative aspect of the particular work. Every time I watch this film, rather than getting bored, I am able to appreciate it in new and different and profound ways - possible only with genuine classic works. You don't have to be Korean to appreciate this film - the themes within it are universal. Finally, I will not provide any synopsis or "short summary" of the film, since I find these kinds of things annoying and "spoiling" to the initial enjoyment of any film. Knowing the plot in any way of any film takes away from complete appreciation of the film; this is one of the worst things your friends can do to you.
