A philosophical quandary: when we truly get a glimpse behind the mask, do we like what we see? This eternal question is directly addressed in chapter 7 of the famed Friday the 13th gross-out series. Here, indestructible killing machine Jason meets his match in the form of a telekinetic teenage girl. Yes, it's "Carrie Goes Camping," although the young lady with special powers might have picked a better vacation spot than Crystal Lake, which has an awful track record for young blondes in tight jeans. This installment is exactly no better or worse than the previous Jason-o-ramas, with the added bonus of a climax in which the imperturbable Mr. Voorhees actually duels someone with supernatural gifts to rival his own. Yes, he does lose his hockey mask (the heroine mind-wills it to pop off), and the results ain't pretty--but then, neither is the Friday the 13th franchise. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews of Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood

Watchable but other than that....
This film is an absolute shame to the Friday the 13th series, as are the prequels and sequels in this woeful horror series. Not content with killing off homicidal maniac Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part 6 which what seemed like he would finally die, the producers had to bring him back once again from the success of the previous film Friday the 13th Part 6:Jason Lives. Tina, a troubled young girl with telekinetic powers travels with her mother and shrink to the idyllic setting of Camp Crystal for a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately with Tina's supernatural powers, she accidentally releases the monster from his watery grave. And so the bloodbath continues in this utterly silly horror yarn with the same old plot: A group of libidinous teenagers provide Jason's perfect victims and you know the rest by now. It is up to Tina to close the Pandora's box and put Jason back where he belonged, in the water stopping the evil "once and for all". Kane Hodder plays Jason with unholy relish, probably why it kept me awake when I rented out this silly slasher flick.

Perhpas my favorite in the series.
When it comes to Friday the 13th, my opinions of which ones in the series I think are "good" is different from the average fan's. The New Blood, despite it's lame title, could very well be my favorite in this long-running series. Why is that? First of all, it features the zombie Jason going on his usual mad-killing spree but this time, like The Final Chapter, there's actually suspense. Director Buechler sets up the shocks well and the movie is viscerally thrilling. But what sets it above the others is Lar Park Lincoln, who delivers a pretty good performance and is definitely a huge cut above the average slasher heroine. Plus, her psychic powers lead to a very fun finale, which features her using her abilities to throw all kinds of objects at Jason, whether it be a couch or some nails. Plus, the make-up effects are very well-done and Jason now looks like the formidable hulking opponent he is. I also recommend Part 4, 6, and Jason Goes to Hell.

Looks like the same OLD blood to me...
Good God... what am I doing to myself by watching this nonsense?! I mean, really-is this 'blood' really all that new?! Looks pretty much like the same stuff I've seen in the past six go-rounds. You know, stuff like:

- The opening sequence that refers to the events of the past sequels, thereby giving the viewer a quick update before the opening credits roll,

- A group of teenage-to-early-twenty-something types who you know are doomed from the get-go,

- A deadly skinny-dip scene,

- Several kills that reflect the 'Friday' franchise's philosophy of Sex and/or illicit substance use leading to the deaths of the people partaking in such activities,

- Jason tryin' out an array of various hand tools on his victims, as well as other items of convenience (including tent stakes, a motorized weed-whacker, and even a party-favor horn),

- An overall lack of genuine scariness, with most of the kills generating more laughs and groans of disappointment than screams of fright.

- Yadda-yadda-yadda and so on and so forth.

But what's a re-hash without a sad attempt at injecting a little freshness into the mix? That's where our psychokinetically-gifted heroine and her manipulative therapist comes in. Of course, the whole head-case deal was done to death (so to speak) in Part V, but this time the protagonist can actually manipulate stuff with the power of her mind! Which she does of course in the final face-off against undead Jason, which culminates in quite possibly the most illogical and nonsensical ending a 'Friday' flick's been saddled with! Man, was that (anti)climactic moment sad. 'Course, it's not quite as sad as my decision to check out Part VIII! I'm SICK I tell you! SICK!!!

On the upside, the crew did some pretty good make-up appliance effects on Jason here. Ya got'cher exposed bones, rotted-looking flesh, the works. He'd have been right at home in those 'Living Dead' flicks, lemme tells ya...
