You'll spot a few future "name" actors in various installments: Kevin Bacon is morbidly dispatched in the first one. But in general, the dominant focus is how to kill horny teenagers, most of whom have gathered at Camp Crystal Lake in the misguided belief that the curse of the impossible-to-kill Jason has worn off. The first movie has a certain raw, crummy ability to shock, Part 2 is a dismal retread, and Part 3 actually features interesting use of 3-D, which doesn't translate to its flat DVD version. The fourth is boldly subtitled The Final Chapter, and we all know where that went, but it does have Crispin Glover doing a funky dance. A New Beginning and Jason Lives continue Jason's bad mood, maybe because the hockey mask doesn't fit right. The seventh chapter, The New Blood, stakes Jason against a worthy opponent (Crystal Lake's answer to telekinetic Carrie), but the result is the same. Part 8's subtitle, Jason Takes Manhattan, is wittier than the movie itself, as Jason menaces an unlucky cruise ship of high-schoolers bound for New York--where Mr. J fits right in.
Some of the films come with commentaries from directors or cast members, including heralded Jason performer Kane Hodder. Brief documentaries (ranging from five to 15 minutes) cover separate installments with amusing anecdotes, including interviews with Sean S. Cunningham, Tom Savini, and various actors. In another doc, actors speak of the fraternity of young actors who've been slaughtered by Jason over the years. A deleted-scenes section is skimpy and not very interesting, while the tricks of special-effects gore merit a film to themselves. It's a customer-savvy DVD box, even if the effect of watching a bunch of this stuff together is a little dispiriting. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews of Friday the 13th - From Crystal Lake to Manhattan (8 Movies)
Good, but why stop at Part 8? This is a good collection of the F13 movies. I'm a big horror buff, and there was no way I could resist buying this. There are 4 discs. Disc 1 holds F13 #1 and 2, Disc 2 holds 3 and 4, Disc 3 holds 5 and 6, and Disc 4 holds 7 and 8. This F13 collection seems to have been a good idea gone short. It's worht buying, but could've been made a whole lot better. If you ask me, this is what the creators of this collection should've made: Basically, this same collection, but instead of just the 1st 8 movies put onto 4 discs, a 5th disc with Jason Goes To Hell The Final Friday, and Jason X. Then, a 6th disc containing a bunch of extra features and interviews with the makers of the movies and the actors in all of them. Also, any deleted scenes from the movies. I think that would be awesome!!! And while I think this could have been done a whole lot better, this is still definately worth buying for F13 fans and horror fans. <

Solid classic fun
When I first purchased this(Me being a HUGE Jason Voorhees fan) I thought after reading their were 2 movies on each disc that they are 2-sided DVDs...NO!! This was a HUGE relief for me...ANYWAY...This IS a must for ANY Voorhees fan, just the nostalgia alone of thinking "I used to get scared from this?" is priceless, the curse on crystal lake can be purchased 8 chapters at one time....Friday the 13th is good and it gets better as 2-3-4-5-6-7-and 8 hit the DVD player
a five star release of movies that are really 3 to 1 stars at most
ok i admit i like the friday the 13th movies. they are poorly made, badly edited, but they remind me of my youth and the days of slashers long gone. this set is first rate featureing the first 8 movies in this ,the longest running horror series in movie history.all are wide screen and the extras disc is full of many intresting things from all the movies. a great set if you love the series!!
