Customer Reviews of Freeze Frame
One of My Favorite J. Geils Albums I really like this album. It was Peter Wolf's last official album with the band and man, is it good! Songs like "Centerfold," "Freeze Frame," "Flamethrower," "Rage in the Cage" and the great "Do You Remember When" should have a place in every comprehensive CD collection. I remember getting this on 8-track, Christmas of 1982; I've since updated to CD and it has never sounded better. Simply great music played by one of the best bands out there!
The J. Geils Band, at its Commercialized Best
Freeze Frame was the J. Geils Band's most commercially successful album and the only one to reach number one on the charts. It also marked the first (and only) time that the band scored a number one single (Centerfold) and had three top forty songs on one album (Centerfold, Freeze Frame, and Angel in Blue). The band had been together for more than a decade before it finally reached the pinnacle of success, with Freeze Frame reaching the top of the charts in many countries.
That being said, "Freeze Frame" is not the band's best effort. I'm not saying that it's bad. It isn't. There are several good, catchy, memorable songs on this album like the ever popular "Centerfold", "Freeze Frame", "Angel in Blue", "P*ss on the Wall", and "Rage in the Cage". But taken as a whole, I don't like this album as much as many of the efforts from the 1970's. Part of the reason is that this album de-emphasizes blues music and tends more toward a pop sound overall. Blues/funk was the foundation of the J. Geils Band and as an old fan of the group, a complete departure from these roots is a difficult pill to swallow.
A few songs on this collection are not really up to par. Tunes such as "River Blindness" and "Do you Remember When" are not necessarily bad, but they are also not very memorable and they have too much of a techno- pop sound for my taste. I think the band gave in and did this to help sell more albums. Play this album and then play an older J. Geils Band disc like, say, "The Morning After". There is a distinct difference in the songs and the direction of the music. "Freeze Frame" seems to have been made to appeal to the masses, making it somewhat of a sellout effort.
Overall, though, "Freeze Frame" is still an album worth owning and it's a must for the collection of any J. Geils Band fan. It's more commercial and more pop- oriented than the band's other music. But it's still better than 90 percent of the music that was made back in the early 1980's when it was released; with some good, lively tunes to get you off your seat and on your feet.
Believe the Hype
Don't buy into the clichéd idea that something commercially successful can't still be a work of genius, that's preposterous. Let's cut to the chase - this CD ROCKS THE HOUSE and has been legendary since it's release. Buy it, and you will listen to it many, many times. I couldn't give this CD enough stars.
