Customer Reviews of Freedom
TOO LATE MAYBE? I got this album cause I get all his albums. I definitely think it's good. I think it's great that a Christian artist will take a chance and make an "instrumental only" album. In the notes he says he's had this music in his head for years. Some years ago he was asked to submit a song for the "Titanic" soundtrack when that film was being made. His song ,"In My Arms Again" off of the "Live the Life" album was unfortunatley beat out by Celine Dions' "My Heart Will GO On". Anyway, maybe he's trying to get that music out that should have been put out then. Also, maybe trying to show "people" that he can "score" (musically) too. I think the only real dissapointment is track 10. Michael cannot and should not "scat". It sounds horrible and it has no place here. The track starts out very huge, and full sounding but never reaches a peak. None of the different instrument solos stand out, they just kinda go nowhere. I think track 12 (along with the rest) is awefully good though. Excellent drumming and smooth guitar playing make this a mature cut. I also wish he'd move on from the processed drum sound that is on some of the other cuts. I definetely like MWS, don't get me wrong, but I also listen to alot of "secular" instrumental works and I would like to see Christain music catch up a little. It certainly did alot with the instrumentals on the end of the "Streams" album. I hope he does this again. Maybe he'll take a break from singing for awhile.
An inspirational and moving listening experience
For anyone who loves beautiful, moving music, this CD is a must. Also for anyone who has been a fan of Michael's insrumental pieces on some of his previous recording releases (with songs on them), I think this would be an enjoyable CD. I have listened to this CD several times now after purchasing it 2 days ago. A peaceful feeling comes over me as I listen, and sometimes a piece inspires me visually in my mind. It's as if certain pieces are telling a story. I have recently read somewhere in a Michael W. Smith interview (I'm sorry I do not recall where) that a few of the pieces of music on this cd were inspired by a soldier's story of his life on the battlefield in one of America's earlier wars. The music on a few of the songs/pieces reflects that theme in a beautiful way. I love this CD. I hope Michael W. Smith is encouraged to continue writing instrumental music, and I even believe if the right people hear this CD , he could easily be considered as someone to write music for film scores. A few of the songs/pieces on this CD sounded perfect for film music, in my opinion. I love this CD, and I plan to listen to it over and over again in the days to come. I think this would make a good gift also for anyone who enjoys peaceful instrumental music, such as Yanni's...and also some of the songs/pieces on this CD had an Irish/Celtic flair to them reminicent of the "Riverdance" music (Irish Dance Show music). All in all I recommend this CD highly, and I hope you do enjoy it, as I have.
Courage...Commitment....Compassion
I don't understand how he does it, but Michael W Smith has amazingly communicated these feelings to his audience with a instrumental-only CD. It's powerful, it's breath-taking, and sometimes it even makes me cry. Put this with one of President Bush's speeches about freedom...man, you've got an awesome combination.
