But the season's most pivotal story arc is the separation of Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Maris. "Moon Dance," which marked Grammer's directorial debut, is a series benchmark, as a crestfallen Niles tangos with his unrequited love, Daphne (Jane Leeves), at a high society ball. Not that the Crane family still doesn't have issues to work out. Frasier cannot abide being beaten at chess by Martin (John Mahoney) in "Chess Pains." Frasier and Niles ill-advisedly go into joint practice in "Shrink Rap," and find themselves on the opposite sides of a sanity hearing in "Crane vs. Crane." Lilith is sorely missed, but in this season's blast-from-the-past episode, Shelley Long returns in "The Show Where Diane Comes Back." It is a joy to see Cheers resurrected, if only in Diane's self-absorbed new play, which Frasier agrees to back. And any episode with Frasier's amoral agent Bebe (Harriet Sansom Harris) is must-see television. Frasier's humor was character-based, rather than topical, giving it a longer shelf life. For those who lament the end of one of television's gold standard series, this boxed set will be excellent therapy. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of Frasier - The Complete Third Season
5 Stars for Show, 1 Star for Extras I know you know that the show is great, hilarious, witty, intelligent, smart and fun. Even though the phrase "Special Features" is liberally plastered all over the case and discs, it is simply false advertising. <
> <
>The lack of decent extras is blatantly obvious and inexcusable. Its like leaving a couple of penny for a tip after an expensive meal. <
> <
>And you know its not "to keep the prices low" Frasier is/was as popular as the Seinfeld series, and the Seinfeld DVDs are roughly the same price as the Frasier DVDs. <
> <
>The Seinfeld DVDs have tons and tons of commentary, behind the scenes, interviews, bloopers, deleted scenes, while the Frasier DVDs have some sad extras which are nothing more than commonly themed snippets of the shows strung together with perhaps a very brief interview by an actor or two to start it off. <
> <
>I absolutely love the show, despise what they did to the fans who were expecting more. <
> <
>I hope they dont plan on releasing a DVD packed with bonus features for sale in the future, that would be a greedy slap in the face.
This One Was The Best
Though many think that the second or fourth season was the best Frasier, they're, ahem, misguided. This season the writing was superlative, the troupe completely synched, and the laughs thick and fast.

>This season happened before the series succumbed to complete self-absorption and self-parody. This is the season where Diane from Cheers makes a return visit, and that episode is great. But the best episodes involve the amazing Mercedes Ruehl as Frasier's erudite, aggressive and yet wonderfully vulnerable station manager. You can't help but think that Frasier had learned something from this encounter; the writers have him forgetting much too much of it in the seasons to come...

>Niles starts his drift away from Maris, and in a hysterical way. The episode where he does the tango with Jane Leeves is just a knockout, and great fun. Perhaps the only character left out in the cold a bit is Martin. One episode has him in his underwear, and he seems to shrink so much into it...I did not like that.

>Anyway, this is it: the best season of them all. Even through there are four more to come, this one is "for the books."
Frasier's eminence was already evident when Niles' eminence was only iminent

>Fabulous! This DVD represents another peek into the lives and times of the Drs Crane, Martin, Daphne and Roz in Seattle. It is peppered with witty and urbane humour, buttered with enthralling narratives, and doused with strong characters and class. I would reccommend sitting down to view the many episodes with a sharp little mature cheddar from New Zealand and a glass or two of a good Cabernet!
