Touted as being the most popular dinnerware pattern of all time, informal Franciscan Desert Rose earthenware was introduced in 1941 and is one of only two Franciscan patterns that continues to be in production today. Collectors prize the earlier pieces of this folksy pottery, but current dinnerware pieces are constructed even more solidly than the originals to meet contemporary needs and are excellent for filling in an incomplete collection. This cream-colored 12-1/2-inch cake plate has fluted edges and a heavy earthenware cover that keeps a nutty tea cake or dense chocolate caramel torte fresh and under wraps until serving time. The cover features the familiar American Southwest-inspired motif of handpainted dusty pink roses trailing around the sides on a leafy vine while a sculpted ceramic rose forms the delightful finial on the lid. This Franciscanware uses high-quality clay along with superior firing techniques and glazes, which make it safe for the dishwasher, freezer, and microwave oven.
