Floodplain Modelling Using HEC-RAS by Gary Dyhouse, Jennifer
I would primarily be user of ground water flow and transport models and I have a postgraduate background in hydrology but I do not normally use hydrology in my everyday work. I am very familiar with the philosophy and approach to using computers to model natural hydraulic systems so I just needed a quick way into floodplain modelling without having to wade through the mechanics of implementing a numerical model on a computer.
HEC-RAS is the industry standard for floodplain modelling and Haestad Methods is the professionals solution for all aspects of modelling the management of water. It therefore was only logical that I make Haestad my first port of call in search a rapid entry to floodplain modelling and I was not disappointed.
The floodplain modelling using HEC-RAS book is designed to be both a comprehensive aid to floodplain modelling and a text book for obtaining Continuing Education Units. Each chapter has a similar structure. There is detailed description of the particular subject of that chapter and all the appropriate equations are provided with their derivation described in full. However what makes this book most accessible is that there are very detailed examples of how each of the equations are used, what information is required, what format the data must be in and how step by step the eventual result is arrived at. Finally there is a brief summary of the chapter and a series of problems to be solved.
The problems at the end each chapter can be solved with the software provided. HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and Graphical HEC-1 are provided. There are also versions that can be used with ArcInfo or ArcView. This what particularly appealed to me. Rather than literally jumping in the deep end and trying to model the particular problem I was interested in, I was, over a week, able to build up my floodplain modelling skills using the problems.
The modelling of open channels, bridges, culverts and floodways are covered in detail in separate chapters and there is a whole chapter on the US National Flood Insurance Scheme. There are advanced chapters on channel modification, mobile boundary situations and unsteady flow modelling.
The units throughout the book are in both English and SI units. The academic software that comes with the book is easy to install and set up.
Overall I would recommend the book for both the beginner and the professional. It is an excellent reference book and covers most of problems that one is likely to encounter in the course of your professional career.
